People in their 40s and older looking for warning signs of diseases may be overlooking key symptoms in their mouth.

According to a survey commissioned by the Academy of General Dentistry, 63% of those aged 45-64 with an oral symptom considered to be a key indicator of a serious health condition were unaware of the link.

Staying on top of your oral health is important at every age, but especially so as you get older. Here's what to keep in mind in middle age.

"Cancer treatment often evokes images of hair loss and fatigue, but for patients receiving chemotherapy and radiation, it can also take a toll on their oral health.

Mouth sores, infections and jaw deterioration are among the side effects of cancer treatments that can cause great discomfort for patients.

Because a body fighting cancer already has a weakened immune system, pre-existing oral health issues can become far worse during treatment."

The dreaded cavity is one of the last things you want to hear about at the dentist.

They're formed by bacteria in your mouth produce acids that attack the enamel. These bacteria are fueled by sugars and starches in your mouth.

The acids then erode the enamel, creating tiny holes, which are the cavities.

To help prevent them, use great oral hygiene! Properly brush and floss, limit sugar, and see your dentist regularly.
