Incisor work is ✨ESSENTIAL✨ A very easy way to tell if your horse needs to be balanced are hooks. These are considered restrictions in the mouth. This restricts the Anterior/Posterior movement of the horses jaw which is extremely uncomfortable. Try clenching your teeth together and not letting bottom jaw(mandible) slide back and forth as you tip your head forward and back. Then, unclench and allow your mandible to slide forward and back as you tip your head. A lot more comfortable, right? Yes! This is normal! Your mandible is suppose to move forward and back with your head which is the same with horses. As well from side to side. And a lot of other animals as well. Horse chew in a circular motion, down, out, up and in. So if they don’t have AP movement, this can be detrimental to their health! On another note, just floating the premolars and molars will cause a gap between the occlusal surface of the back teeth. This causes the horse to not be able to masticate their food properly leading to weight loss and also quidding. Gapping the molars and premolars causes excess pressure on the incisors due to the horse trying to push down harder to get full occlusion. Which leads to hypercementosis and TMJ discomfort/sensitivity. I hope this gives all horse owners some insight into the world of their horses mouth and some knowledge into the world of Neuromuscular Based Dentistry!🐴🦷

Before and after photos of Ty. You can see how he is holding his back and his stomach up. His hunters bump is completely gone due to him being able to rotate his pelvis into a much more natural position!

This is what happens when the tooth below is missing and the other tooth has nothing to wear against. Along with years and years of no dentistry.

This pony was in good body condition and seemed fairly happy. Just goes to show how important regular dentistry is and what can be hiding in what seems to be happy healthy horse/ponies mouth.

I highly recommend yearly floats/exams, but if that isn't in your finances try and have someone out every two or three years. If this pony had, had even every third year done this wouldn't be a problem.

Only addressing molars and not incisors is like your farrier only trimming heels and leaving the toe untouched. Just think how unbalanced that would leave a foot!

This horses incisors blocked all of the proper chewing motion for the entire mouth. Resulting in one of the worst mouths I've come across in a few years.

There needs to be equal attention to all parts of the mouth, just like there needs to be balance to the entire foot.

Just going through my picture archive and came across this gem. I had removed the spike sticking in her cheek prior to the picture as she was very uncomfortable.

This filly obviously wasn't a fan of turning one way, and it isn't hard to see why!

Just a reminder for everyone to get horses teeth done BEFORE you send them for training. It will save a lot of grief for your trainer and your horse.

Note: This mouth was far from finished and the picture was taken at the beginning of the balance.
