If your baby has been diagnosed with a tongue tie or lip tie, you might wonder if it will go away on its own.

Here's the truth: tongue tie and lip tie do not resolve themselves.

While it’s possible that trauma to the area (like a fall) can change how the tissue appears, this isn't the same as resolution. In fact, untreated ties can lead to compensations that affect eating, speech, and oral motor function over time.

Many children find ways to work around the restriction of their tongue or lip tie, but these "workarounds" often come at the expense of proper oral development. Over time, these compensations can affect how they speak, eat, or even breathe. While it may seem like they’re getting by, true resolution requires proper treatment, to release the tethered tissues and restore natural function.
