Good news! We now have a treatment that is promising to reverse white spot lesions after braces. How do these form? The most common spots we see form are in between teeth from lack of flossing, or after braces if the patient did not brush thoroughly enough…and they are permanent! Previously, there was nothing we could do other than possible fillings. Now, we have a potential solution that is healthier & more conservative. Without treatment, these areas typically demineralize and breakdown tooth structure, requiring bigger dental treatment, such as fillings. ļæ¼ Thereļæ¼ are different types of white spots so it’s important that we evaluate the teeth first to see if they qualify for this treatment option. ļæ¼ ļæ¼ If you have questions about the treatment or potential results for your case, please bring those questions ļæ¼to you or your teen’s appointment so that we may discuss together.

I can’t tell you how many good teeth I crown or even extract because of this situation. We can’t save your tooth if a wisdom tooth caused root cavities. It’s more common than you think.

Many impacted wisdom teeth cause no pain, swelling, or obvious symptoms. However, that does not always mean they are harmless.

A 2024 study published in The Saudi Dental Journal found that impacted lower wisdom teeth were frequently associated with tooth decay, particularly on the back surface of the neighboring second molar. In many cases, the healthy tooth next to the wisdom tooth was affected more often than the wisdom tooth itself.

Researchers analyzed 1,591 dental panoramic X-rays and found that nearly 40% of impacted lower wisdom teeth were associated with carious lesions. The highest risk was seen when the wisdom tooth was tilted forward toward the adjacent tooth (mesioangular impaction), creating an area where plaque, bacteria, and food debris can accumulate and become difficult to clean.

This is one reason dentists often recommend regular monitoring of impacted wisdom teeth. Hidden decay can develop between teeth long before pain appears, and by the time symptoms occur, significant damage may already have occurred.

Regular dental examinations and panoramic X-rays can help detect these problems early and protect the healthy tooth next to an impacted wisdom tooth.

How does Smoking affect your dental health?

Smoking changes the way your teeth look and function, and even the way you enjoy food.
To***co stains your teeth, often turning enamel yellow or brown. Cosmetic dental procedures (such as teeth whitening) may not work as effectively or last as long.
Smoking dulls your sense of smell and taste.
Smoking causes chronic bad breath.
