It is important that your dentist or hygienist checks your “pocket depths” and bone levels around the surfaces of each tooth and records those measurements at least yearly. This determines your gum health status. Gum disease is associated with little or no discomfort or pain, so it is important to allow your hygienist and dentist to regularly assess your gum tissues. Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround your teeth– it can be mild with signs of inflammation only (gingivitis), or it can be severe (periodontitis) with signs of bone loss that can lead to tooth loss.
