The body keeps score — and the mouth is often one of the first places it shows.

Many patients notice worsening dental symptoms during seasons of stress, exhaustion, overwork, emotional overwhelm, or poor sleep. Teeth become more sensitive. Grinding increases. Gums become inflamed. Healing slows.

When the nervous system is overloaded, the body prioritizes survival over maintenance and repair. Oral tissues are highly sensitive to these shifts.
Holistic dentistry recognizes that burnout is not just emotional — it becomes biological. And the mouth often reflects it before anything else does.

Healing the mouth sometimes starts with helping the body finally feel safe enough to rest.

Being “holistic” isn’t a trend here—it’s a lifestyle, a philosophy, and a deeply rooted commitment to do better for our patients. That’s why I’m so proud to share that every single member of our team is now IABDM certified. 💚

This certification means we’re trained in the science of whole-body dentistry. We know the TRUE negative consequences of the improper removal of mercury containing amalgam fillings. It’s not about not “using” them. The worst thing you can do with your amalgams is have them removed improperly. They are SAFER in your mouth than the off gassing you are exposed to in the traditional removal method widely done in dentistry.

If you’ve ever felt dismissed by conventional dentistry, I hope this gives you peace: You’ve found a team that sees you, respects your body, and is trained to treat the whole of you—not just your teeth. ✨

If this post sounds emotionally charged, that’s because it is. This distinction matters more than most people realize.

Being mercury-safe is not something a dentist casually decides to do one day. It requires significant investment in training, equipment, filtration systems, protective protocols, and continuing education.

Offices that follow proper mercury-safe protocols spend considerable time and money to protect both patients and staff during amalgam removal.

A “mercury-free” office simply means they no longer place mercury fillings. That does not automatically mean they remove existing mercury fillings safely.

This is where things become misleading for patients.

Many practices market themselves as holistic or mercury-free because they know patients are looking for safer care. But if proper removal protocols are not being followed, patients may assume they are receiving a level of protection that simply is not there.

This conversation is not about fear or attacking dentists. It is about honesty, transparency, and patient education.

If a practice claims to prioritize whole-body health, that commitment should extend to how they protect patients and their own team during mercury removal procedures.

Dr. Valerie is amazing too. She is kind and attentive! I had to have two crowns put on today. She does excellent work. I had a bridge done last year.." says Jo on Google

Many people leave the dental office feeling like they didn’t do enough.

They’re told to brush better, floss more, and come back in six months — without ever being taught how the body actually influences oral health.

So when problems arise, it feels personal.

But in many cases, the issue isn’t effort. It’s missing information.

Oral health is connected to the entire body, from metabolism to sleep to stress to hormones. When those connections are understood, care becomes more effective and far less frustrating.

You were never given the full picture. Now you can see it differently.

Brushing your teeth is important. But it’s not the whole story.

Many people brush consistently and still develop cavities. That’s because brushing addresses the surface — not the underlying environment that determines whether enamel can stay strong.

Saliva, mineral status, diet, blood sugar, and even sleep all influence the mouth in ways a toothbrush cannot.

This isn’t about doing more. It’s about understanding more.

When you support the conditions that allow teeth to thrive, brushing becomes part of the solution — not the only solution.

Many people are told they just have “bad teeth.”

But teeth are not isolated structures. They are living tissues influenced by the entire body. When the body is depleted of minerals, under stress, or struggling to regulate inflammation, the mouth reflects it.

This is why you’ll often see dental issues increase during seasons of burnout, illness, hormonal shifts, or poor nutrition.

It’s not a personal failure. It’s physiology.

The good news is that when you begin to support the body — through nutrition, mineral balance, sleep, and nervous system regulation — the mouth often becomes more stable and resilient.

Your teeth are not the problem. They’re the signal.

Floss matters. But not all floss is created equal.

Many conventional floss products contain synthetic materials, petroleum-based waxes, or chemical coatings that don’t align with a low-toxin lifestyle. If you’re trying to reduce exposure, switching to a natural floss can be a simple upgrade.

Look for silk floss, bamboo fiber floss, or options coated with natural waxes like candelilla or beeswax.

That said, floss alone does not create healthy gums. Nutrition, inflammation, blood sugar balance, and the oral microbiome matter just as much.

Choose cleaner tools, but never forget the deeper terrain.

Teeth grinding in children is often brushed off as something they’ll simply outgrow. Sometimes they do. But many times, grinding is communication.

It may be the body’s attempt to open the airway, respond to low-quality sleep, release tension, or cope with nervous system stress.

Allergies, mouth breathing, tongue ties, enlarged tonsils, and emotional overwhelm can all play a role.

Rather than only protecting the teeth, holistic care asks why the body is grinding in the first place.

Children are incredibly adaptive. When we support sleep, breathing, regulation, and development, symptoms often improve naturally.

Listen to the signal.

The mouth is more emotional than most people realize.
We clench when we suppress. We grind when the nervous system is overloaded. We hold tension in the jaw when life feels heavy. Stress chemistry also changes saliva, inflammation levels, and healing capacity.

This doesn’t mean dental issues are “all in your head.” It means the psyche and the body are connected — and the mouth is often where that connection becomes visible.

Holistic dentistry honors both biology and emotion. Sometimes supporting the nervous system, boundaries, rest, and emotional processing becomes part of oral healing too.

Your body is always communicating.

There’s been a lot of noise around hydroxyapatite lately — especially when the word “nano” gets brought into the conversation.

I’m not afraid to step off a bandwagon. I did it with fluoride, and I would do it again if the evidence led me there.

I don’t have loyalty to any toothpaste brand or ingredient. My perspective comes from years of clinical experience, seeing patterns in real patients, and taking the time to read and understand the research myself.

Hydroxyapatite is not a foreign substance to the body, it’s what your teeth are made of. When used appropriately in oral care, current evidence supports its role in remineralization and enamel support.

If new, strong evidence emerges that challenges that, I will be the first to acknowledge it. I’ve already shifted my entire approach to dentistry once — from traditional to holistic — and I’m always open to evolving when better information is presented.

As with any product, sourcing and formulation matter. But when used appropriately, hydroxyapatite remains one of the most biocompatible and supportive ingredients for enamel health.

Education matters more than fear.
