Certain lifestyle and health factors can increase the risk of developing oral cancer. These may include to***co use, excessive alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure to the lips, poor oral hygiene, and diets low in fruits and vegetables.

Understanding these risk factors is an important step toward protecting your oral and overall health. Maintaining healthy habits and attending regular dental visits can help support early detection.

What is oral cancer?

Oral cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the mouth or oral cavity. It can affect the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, or the floor of the mouth. Like many health conditions, early detection plays an important role in successful treatment.

Regular dental visits help dentists detect unusual changes in the mouth that may require further evaluation. If something doesn’t look or feel right, getting it examined sooner rather than later can make a difference.
