Three people confessed their brushing habits to the internet. Dr. Pedersen () read the charges.

Brushing before breakfast instead of after? Not guilty. Eating leaves acid sitting on your teeth, and brushing while it is there is what costs you a little enamel. Brush first, eat second.

Spitting but never rinsing? Not guilty. That film you are leaving behind is the fluoride from your toothpaste. Rinsing washes your own treatment down the drain. Stop helping.

Mouthwash in the water flosser instead of water? Sketchy. It will not hurt you, but mouthwash changes the bacteria in your mouth, and it keeps changing them all the way down through your gut. A fresh burst now and then is fine. As your daily flosser fluid, she is not a fan.

Always be learning.

Dr. Lily Nacke and Dr. Michael Luong spent the weekend in Nebraska for restorative training on the AGD Master Track, the Academy of General Dentistry's path to Mastership. Dr. Pedersen earned her MAGD not long ago, and now two more of our doctors are on the same road.

Restorative is the dentistry you feel the most. Fillings that hold. Crowns that fit the first time. Worn and chipped teeth rebuilt so they look like nothing ever happened.

Patients ask me which toothbrush to buy every single day. Here is the honest answer.

A manual brush can absolutely get the job done, if you give it two full minutes, twice a day, with gentle circular technique. Almost nobody does that perfectly, which is why we usually point people toward an electric brush. The timer does not negotiate, the head moves faster than your wrist can, and studies show electric brushing reduces plaque and gum inflammation more than manual brushing over time.

Whatever you buy, buy soft bristles. Hard bristles feel like they are working and can wear enamel and irritate gums instead. If your bristles splay out after a few weeks, you are scrubbing too hard. Replace the brush every three months, sooner if the bristles are bent, and start fresh after a cold or the flu. On an electric, replace the head and keep the handle.

Two free upgrades while you are at it. Spit after brushing instead of rinsing, so the fluoride stays on your teeth instead of going down the drain. And store the brush upright in the open so it dries out, not sealed under a travel cap, and not beside the toilet.

Your teeth keep a record of things you never mentioned.

Grinding leaves flattened edges and a scalloped tongue. Silent acid reflux thins the enamel on the back of the upper front teeth, sometimes before anyone has felt heartburn. Sleeping with your mouth open dries out the gums along the front teeth while the rest look fine. Nail biting and pen chewing wear one small spot on the front teeth. A sinus infection can make several upper back teeth ache at once with no cavity in sight. And it is not how much you drink, it is how many times a day your teeth get hit.

None of this is a lecture. It is just the story your teeth are already telling, and most of it is easier to fix when it is caught early.
