You’d think after almost 12 years as a dentist and 4 years owning a practice, I’d have it all figured out.
I don’t. 😂 And 2026 taught me to be okay with that.
Social media shows the growth, beautiful offices, amazing teams and wins. It doesn’t always show what we learn getting there.
5 things 2026 taught me:
1️⃣ Not every decision will be the right one.
Some worked beautifully. Others were expensive lessons. Instead of replaying them and getting super mad over it, I ask: What did this teach me? Learn, adjust and move forward. Give yourself grace.
2️⃣ Boundaries don’t make me unkind.
I care deeply about my patients and team, but not every problem needs to become my emergency and not every opinion deserves space in my head. Sometimes, “I’ve done what I can” is enough. I shouldn’t always have to feel like I should say yes to everything. It’s okay to say no.
3️⃣ I can’t pour everything into my practice and leave nothing for myself.
My health, marriage, friendships and time matter too. I need days when I’m not “Dr. Do.” The practice needs me—but I need me too.
4️⃣ I don’t have to control everything.
The perfectionist in me is learning to trust the right people, delegate and accept that different doesn’t mean wrong. I don’t have to do everything myself. Sometimes letting go is what finally gives you room to breathe.
5️⃣ Loud doesn’t mean majority.
I won’t let 1–2 unhappy voices make me forget the hundreds of patients who trust us, hug us, refer their families and genuinely love coming to see us. Those are the voices I want to carry home. I can’t make everyone happy and it’s okay.
Four years into practice ownership, I’m realizing success isn’t perfection. It’s becoming more grounded. More humble. More willing to learn. Better at setting boundaries, letting go and protecting my peace.
So if you’re building something too: give yourself grace.
You can make the wrong decision. Change your mind. Ask for help. Say no. Rest. And still be incredibly proud of what you’ve built.
Social media may make it look like everyone has it figured out. We don’t. We’re all learning as we g
