Plaque, as you may know, is a colorless film of bacteria that clings to our teeth. If left unchecked, plaque builds up on the surface of our teeth and eats away at the topmost layers.

The result?

Cavities.

We prevent cavities by brushing, flossing, and maintaining oral health with a regular hygiene routine. But what do we do if a cavity has already formed?

Let’s discuss dental fillings!

To treat cavities, we must remove the decayed part of the tooth and fill the hole with a synthetic material. The process looks a little something like this:

First, we apply a local anesthetic to numb the area around the targeted tooth.

We then use a drill, an air abrasion instrument, or a laser to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. After this step, we run a diagnostic on the area to ensure there are no lingering traces of tooth decay.

Next, we clean the hollowed area to prepare it for the filling. We’ll also apply a liner to protect the nerve if necessary.

Layer by layer, we apply a tooth-coloured material and use a special light to harden it as we go along.

Finally, once we have successfully applied each layer, we will shape the material to fit the natural contours of your tooth and polish it off to leave it looking nice and shiny!
