On Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 12:20 PM, Dr. Cardall was hurrying across Utah Valley University’s campus in Orem to attend an open dialogue featuring renowned speaker Charlie Kirk. Delayed by a few minutes after assisting an office team member, he was en route when a call from a friend at the event shattered the moment: an unthinkable tragedy had struck. What began as disbelief morphed into shock, then profound sorrow, and finally, resolve. A resolve to champion open dialogue, defend the sanctity of free speech, and reject violence and its celebration as a means of discourse.
In the words of Edmund Burke, β€œAll that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” Those seeking to silence other views with violence will not win. Let us be the light that overcomes darkness, bold and unrelenting in our pursuit.
