Children's dentistry at our Oregon City family practice runs on one principle: the first visit exists to be a good one.

Dr. Sara sees most of our younger patients and she isn't in a hurry. If she gets everything done that we hoped to, that's a good appointment. If she doesn't, but your child leaves happy and willing to come back, that's also a good appointment.

She wins children over without needing laughing gas, by taking her time and connecting with them before anything else happens.

Parents are often more nervous than the child. Usually they worry that their kid won't cooperate and somebody will push the issue. That worry is worse if you're not keen on the dentist yourself.

Dr. Rima is a big believer that if you do the right thing, the right things come back to you. The only target she sets is being a little better than the day before and making sure our patients leave well cared for.

For years, one tooth stuck out just enough to bug our patient in every photo. Her son's wedding was the nudge she needed to finally fix it.

There's about a year until the wedding. That's plenty of time!

Most Invisalign treatment takes six to eight months. When someone has a big date on the calendar, a wedding, a graduation, a special trip, Dr. Annalisa still tells them to plan on a full year. The extra months are deliberate. They take the pressure off, leave room for the finishing touches, and mean nobody is counting down the weeks.

People who put treatment off usually tell her the same thing. The date came around faster than they expected.

Almost everyone has that one thing. The tooth you notice in every photo. The one you've learned to smile around, or hide behind a closed-lip grin, for years.

If the dentist makes you anxious, bring a weighted blanket. It helps more than you would think.

Steady pressure settles the nervous system, which is why some patients bring one from home for longer appointments. The same trick is already in the room with you. That heavy lead apron we drape over you for x-rays does a similar job, and plenty of people find it oddly calming.

Bring your headphones and your own playlist. Bring someone whose company makes you feel safer. Tell us what makes you feel anxious so we can work around it, and what makes it better so we can do more of it.

None of it is silly to us. Whatever gets you through the door and into the chair is worth doing.

Here's a question worth asking any dentist before an implant: "Is this something you should be doing, or should a specialist?" You deserve an honest answer. Here's ours.

We place a lot of dental implants right here in our office, and we're comfortable doing so anywhere in the mouth, as long as the conditions are right. That means enough healthy bone to support the implant and no added complications.

But some cases are more involved. Sometimes there isn't enough bone structure and extra groundwork would be needed first. Sometimes, in the upper jaw, the sinus sits too low and there isn't enough room, which calls for a procedure to make space. When a case reaches that level of complexity, we'd rather hand it to an oral surgeon who does these procedures day in and day out.

That's not us stepping back from your care. It's us putting your outcome first. An experienced surgeon in those specific situations means more predictable results, and that's what matters.
