Healthy mouths aren’t built in a day… they’re maintained year after year. ✨
These are the yearly habits I recommend to keep your mouth healthy, functional, and thriving long-term:
✔️ Professional dental cleanings & exams
✔️ Oral cancer screenings
✔️ Periodontal (gum health) evaluations
✔️ Airway & bite assessments
✔️ Reviewing the integrity of the materials in your mouth — fillings, crowns, retainers, and appliances
Because dentistry is about so much more than “just cavities.”
Your mouth changes over time. Fillings wear down. Bite patterns shift. Airways can become more compromised. Gum inflammation can quietly progress without pain.
Routine evaluations help us catch problems early — before they become bigger, more expensive, or impact your overall health.
A healthy mouth supports:
• Better breathing
• Better sleep
• Better digestion
• Better longevity
• Better quality of life
Prevention will always be the most powerful form of healthcare. 🤍

That little “bubble” inside your mouth? It might not be what you think…
A mucocele is a harmless, fluid-filled cyst that forms when a minor salivary gland gets blocked or traumatized (think lip biting, cheek chewing, or accidental injury). Instead of saliva flowing normally, it gets trapped under the surface—creating that soft, squishy bump.
Here’s what makes mucoceles confusing:
They often change in size.
Some days it looks almost gone… then suddenly it’s back again. That’s because the fluid can drain and refill repeatedly.
Common signs:
• Smooth, dome-shaped bump (usually inside the lower lip)
• Clear, bluish, or pink in color
• Painless (most of the time)
• Fluctuates in size
When should you actually worry?
Not every bump is “just a mucocele.” You’ll want it evaluated if:
• It persists longer than 2–3 weeks
• It keeps recurring in the same spot
• It becomes painful, firm, or ulcerated
• It interferes with speaking or eating
• You’re not 100% sure what it is
Here’s the part most people don’t realize:
If it doesn’t resolve on its own, it often won’t go away permanently without treatment—because the gland causing it is still damaged.
Treatment is typically simple and quick, but diagnosis matters.
Bottom line:
Not every bump is something serious—but every persistent bump deserves attention.
Your mouth is always giving you clues. Don’t ignore them.

10 things I wouldn’t let my kids do (from a mom + dentist of 20 years):
1. Sip on juice, smoothies, or sports drinks all day
Frequent exposure > amount. Constant sugar + acid = nonstop enamel breakdown.
2. Go to bed without brushing
Nighttime is when saliva drops and bacteria thrive. This is prime cavity time.
3. Mouth breathe without addressing why
Mouth breathing isn’t just a habit—it’s often an airway issue that impacts jaw development, sleep, and oral health.
4. Snack all day long
Every snack resets the acid attack on teeth. Structure meals, protect enamel.
5. Use pacifiers beyond the appropriate age
Prolonged use can impact tongue posture, jaw development, and airway growth.
6. Ignore crowding or “they’ll grow into it”
Crowding is often a sign of underdeveloped jaws—not “big teeth.” Early intervention matters.
7. Have untreated tongue or lip ties
These can affect breathing, feeding, speech, and long-term development of the airway and jaws.
8. Brush quickly without supervision (when they’re little)
Kids don’t have the dexterity to do an effective job on their own for years.
9. Think flossing is optional
If teeth touch, flossing isn’t extra—it’s essential.
10. Skip brushing before breakfast
Plaque builds overnight. Brushing first protects enamel before food and acidic drinks hit your teeth.
This isn’t about perfection—it’s about awareness.
Healthy mouths start with small daily decisions that add up over time.
If you’re a parent trying to do your best… you’re already on the right track!

If you’ve tried mouth taping at night and hated it… this is for you 👇
Mouth taping is everywhere right now—and for good reason. It can support nasal breathing, better sleep, and overall health.
But here’s the part no one talks about:
🚫 If you can’t tolerate it
🚫 If you feel anxious, air-hungry, or like you “can’t get enough air”
🚫 If you rip it off in the middle of the night
👉 That’s not a discipline problem.
👉 That’s not you “doing it wrong.”
It’s often a sign your body is telling you something deeper is going on.
Because if your airway isn’t functioning well… your brain will NOT let you shut your mouth and restrict your backup breathing route.
This can point to:
• Narrow dental arches
• Tongue tie restrictions
• Mouth breathing patterns
• Nasal obstruction
• Poor tongue posture
• Sleep-disordered breathing
Mouth taping is a tool—not the starting point for everyone.
If your airway isn’t ready, forcing it can actually create stress on your system instead of healing.
The goal isn’t just to tape your mouth.
The goal is to make nasal breathing feel effortless.
✨ That’s where real change happens.
If mouth taping feels impossible, don’t ignore it—get curious.
Your airway might be asking for support, not force.

DID YOU KNOW 👇
If your child’s baby teeth have no spacing… it may not just be a cosmetic issue.
In fact, tight, crowded primary teeth can be an early sign of something much bigger:
👉 an underdeveloped jaw
👉 and a potentially compromised airway
Here’s why this matters:
Baby teeth are supposed to have spacing.
Those gaps are nature’s way of making room for larger adult teeth and proper jaw development.
When spacing is missing, it often means:
• The jaws didn’t grow wide enough
• The tongue may not be resting properly on the palate
• The nasal airway may not be developing optimally
And that can lead to:
• Mouth breathing
• Poor sleep quality
• Snoring in kids (not normal 🚩)
• Increased risk for future crowding & extractions
• Long-term airway and health issues
This isn’t about straight teeth.
It’s about growing the face and airway the right way.
✨ Early signs = early intervention = better outcomes
If your child has tightly spaced baby teeth, it’s worth looking deeper—not later.

Hydration isn’t basic. It’s biologic strategy.
In a truly healthy mouth, saliva is doing the heavy lifting:
Buffering acids.
Controlling bacteria.
Protecting enamel.
Supporting the oral-systemic connection.
And saliva depends on one thing: consistent hydration.
When water intake drops, we see it clinically:
→ Increased acidity
→ Dysbiosis of the oral microbiome
→ Higher caries risk
→ Gingival inflammation
→ Chronic halitosis
This is why so many patients “do everything right” and still struggle.
Coffee all morning. Minimal water. Mouth breathing.
That environment is working against your biology.
In a functional dental practice, we don’t just look at teeth—we look at the ecosystem.
Simple, but non-negotiable:
• Water before caffeine
• Consistent intake throughout the day (not all at once)
• Rinse with water after meals/snacks
• Support saliva, don’t deplete it
Because a well-hydrated mouth is more resilient, more balanced, and far less prone to disease.
Elevate your standard of care—starting with something as foundational as water 💧

As a functional dentist I can tell you exactly why your kid is getting cavities even if they brush and floss everyday…
It’s not just about brushing — it’s about the airway.
Most cavities I see in kids trace back to how they breathe, grow, and use their mouth… not just how they clean it.
Here’s what’s really going on:
✨ Mouth breathing dries out saliva (your child’s natural cavity protection) and creates the perfect environment for decay
✨ Tongue ties can limit proper tongue posture, affecting jaw development and trapping food + bacteria
✨ Narrow jaws = crowded teeth, making it harder to clean and easier for plaque to sit undisturbed
✨ Frequent snacking keeps the mouth in a constant acidic state (teeth never get a chance to remineralize)
✨ Hidden sugars in “healthy” snacks feed cavity-causing bacteria all day long
So yes — your child can be brushing twice a day and flossing…
and still be at high risk.
Because we’re missing the why.
In our office, we look at the full picture:
🦷 Airway + breathing patterns
🦷 Tongue function and restrictions
🦷 Jaw development and spacing
🦷 Eating frequency (not just food choices)
🦷 The oral environment as a whole
This is how you actually stop the cycle of cavities — not just chase them.
If your child keeps getting cavities, it’s not bad luck… and it’s not just brushing.
It’s the airway. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

04/11/2026

Turns out it’s not just what you drink… it’s when you brush.
Brushing before coffee helps remove plaque so those pigments have less to cling to (aka fewer stains sticking around 👀).
If you brush after coffee, especially right away, you can actually push acidity into the enamel and make things worse over time.
Small habit. Big difference.
Try it for a week and watch your smile stay brighter 🤍

🪥 Your mouth is the gateway to your overall health, and what you do twice a day truly matters.

🦷 Brushing removes surface buildup, but flossing is what reaches the hidden spaces between teeth where bacteria thrive. When these areas are ignored, it can lead to inflammation that doesn’t just stay in your gums, it can affect your entire body.

🪥 A holistic approach means honoring both steps as essential, using gentle, non-toxic products, and being mindful of how your oral care routine supports your immune system and long term wellness. Small daily habits create powerful, lasting health.

1 functional dentist 5 obsessions 👇🏼
If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on behind the scenes in a functional dental office… here it is:
1. Getting to the ROOT cause (not just patching symptoms)
2. The mouth–body connection (because your gums don’t exist in isolation)
3. Airway + breathing (yes, how you breathe matters more than you think)
4. Inflammation + its role in chronic disease
5. Prevention over reaction — always
We’re not here for quick fixes.
We’re here for long-term health, deeper answers, and care that actually makes sense.
If you’re ready for a different kind of dental experience… this is your sign 🦷✨
