This one is a little unexpected but we promise it is relevant. 😂💡
Dental injuries spike every Halloween, and not just from candy. 👀
Some of the most common Halloween related dental emergencies we see in the dental world include 👇
👻 Opening packaging with your teeth — we know. Everyone does it. Halloween night especially when scissors are nowhere to be found and there is a bag of candy that needs opening immediately. Your teeth are not tools. This is how teeth chip. 😂🦷
🧟 Costume accessories near the mouth — fake fangs, vampire teeth, and other costume props that are not professionally made can put unexpected pressure on natural teeth or dislodge existing dental work. If something feels wrong, take it out. 💗
🍬 Biting into unexpected hard candy — caramel apples with hard candy shells, frozen candy from a cold car, and certain types of hard novelty candy can fracture teeth when bitten down on unexpectedly. The cold plus the force is a particularly dangerous combination for existing fillings and crowns. 😬

Most Halloween dental injuries are completely preventable. Use scissors. Skip the cheap costume fangs. Let frozen candy warm up before eating it. And if something does happen, we are here. 💗

🎃🦷 DID YOU KNOW? HALLOWEEN EDITION
It is not just how much sugar you eat that affects your teeth. It is when and how you eat it. 💡
This one genuinely surprises most people. 👀
Every time you eat or drink something sugary your mouth enters an acid attack cycle. The bacteria in your mouth feed on that sugar and produce acid that attacks your enamel for approximately 20 minutes after each exposure. 🦷
Here is where it gets interesting. Eating ten pieces of candy all at once produces one acid attack cycle of about 20 minutes. Eating one piece of candy every hour throughout the day produces ten separate acid attack cycles, meaning your teeth are under acid attack for over three hours total. 😬
More frequent exposure is significantly more damaging than a larger amount consumed at once. 💡
This is why dentists consistently say that having candy at a set time, ideally with a meal when saliva production is highest, is less damaging than snacking on it continuously throughout the day. It is also why sipping on sugary drinks all day is one of the most damaging habits you can have for your enamel regardless of the total amount consumed. 💗
So this Halloween, if you are going to enjoy the candy, enjoy it all at once rather than snacking on it through the day. Your enamel will thank you. 🎃🦷
