Is seeing believing?? 👀

This patient presented at the beginning of therapy with 6 months of use of CPAP machine with snoring still present, texture aversions when eating and compensatory muscle activations while swallowing. The CPAP was showing much improvement but the patient was hoping for a bit more benefit.

The first image was taken after just 1 month of therapy (January 2026) and was going to be used for an ENT evaluation for other issues. The second image was taken just a few months later (June 2026) as a repeat image request to evaluate possible change in nasal turbinate size.
What we found was incredible!

Check out the airway space (thick arrow) and see the improvement! This was created by simply working and strengthening tongue muscles that were atrophied from years of improper use. You can also see the lift of the back of the tongue (thin arrow) and how much stronger it appears in the second image compared to the first.

These images speak loud but the patient has been speaking even louder. From about week 6-8, they noticed improved swallowing function (which they didn’t even realize they had!), reduction in frequency of heartburn and better efficacy of the CPAP. The patient also reported less severe negative effects when they would sleep without the CPAP after doing therapy. WOW!

Myofunctional therapy is NEVER a replacement for recommended medical treatment or intervention, but it is ALWAYS a great adjunctive therapy to get the best results.
