Don’t let it ferment and forget! 🦷

You are being very generous when leaving food stuck in your mouth for bacteria to feast on.

Here are some ways to remove food from your teeth:

1. Flossing: Regular flossing is the most effective way to remove food particles from between your teeth. But sometimes inconvenient when on the go.

2. Water Flossers: they are great but you don’t carry these everywhere! They use a stream of water to dislodge food particles and plaque.

3. Interdental Brushes: These are small brushes designed to clean between your teeth. They are especially useful for people with braces or dental bridges.

4. Flosspicks: These are come in handy when you only have one hand. Some people find it easier to use than floss.

5. Rinsing with Water: After eating, swishing water around your mouth can help dislodge and remove some of the food particles. No need for mouthwash, water is the best.

6. Eating Fibrous Foods: Do you have room for more food? Eating fibrous foods like apples, carrots, or celery after a meal can help clean teeth naturally. They act as natural toothbrushes and can remove some of the food stuck on and between your teeth.

7. Chewing Sugar-Free Gum (preferably with xylitol) Chewing gum increases saliva production, which helps in washing away food particles.

While these methods are effective in maintaining oral hygiene, they do not replace regular brushing and routine before going to bed and professional dental care

F as in fluoride.

With our functional approach to dental care, we evaluate several factors beyond just teeth and gums to prevent dental diseases and we find that fluoride is unnecessary when we do this. We consider the interplay between oral health and overall body health.

Here's what we consider first:

1. Nutrition and Diet: Understanding the patient's diet is crucial. Yes we often hear that diets high in sugar and acidic foods can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease, but we also have to consider nutrient deficiency.
2. Body’s Biochemistry: we consider the body's overall biochemistry, including pH levels and mineral balance, which can affect tooth and gum health.
4. Oral Microbiome: The balance of bacteria in the mouth is essential for preventing disease.
5. Airway: we consider how we breathe. Chronic mouth breather are at high risk for developing dental disease.
6. Lifestyle: Lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and stress levels can significantly impact oral health.
7. Oral Hygiene Practices. We evaluate the patient's current oral hygiene practices to ensure they are effective and suggest improvements or alternatives to uses of chemicals like mouthwash.
8. Jaw Alignment and Bite: Issues with bite and jaw alignment can lead to problems such as TMJ disorders, which can affect oral health.

By evaluating these aspects, functional dentists aim to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms, to prevent dental disease effectively and not with a bandaid.

So if you take the functional dental approach to dentistry, we won’t need fluoride. 😅

When visiting a dentist, here are five important questions you might consider asking to get a comprehensive understanding of their approach and how it aligns with your overall health goals:

1. How Does My Oral Health Connect with My Overall Health?
- This question will help you understand the link between your oral health and general well-being. A functional dentist can explain how issues in your mouth can affect the rest of your body, and vice versa.

2. What Are the Root Causes of My Dental Issues?
- Functional dentistry focuses on identifying and addressing root causes rather than just treating symptoms. Ask about the underlying causes of any dental problems you're experiencing, such as dietary factors, systemic health issues, or lifestyle habits.

3. Can You Provide a Comprehensive Assessment of My Oral Microbiome and Its Impact?
- The oral microbiome plays a crucial role in both oral and overall health. Understanding its state and how it affects your health can be valuable.

4. How Do You Integrate Nutritional and Lifestyle Counseling into Your Dental Care?
- Nutrition and lifestyle have a significant impact on oral health. Inquire about how the dentist incorporates these aspects into their treatment plans.

5. What Preventive Measures Do You Recommend for Long-Term Oral and Overall Health?
- Prevention is a key aspect of functional dentistry. Ask for personalized recommendations that could help you maintain optimal oral and overall health.

These questions will help you gauge your dentist's approach to dentistry.

Feel free to ask us questions about our functional approach to dentistry!
At Sunset Dental we are here to assist you in achieving better health through oral health. 🦷❤️

Transform your smile and health with the simple art of tongue scraping! 😛

Here are reasons to start tongue scraping:

1. Oral Hygiene: Tongue scraping helps remove bacteria, food debris, fungi, toxins, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue. This is essential for maintaining oral hygiene.

2. Fresh Breath: Bad breath, or halitosis, is often caused by bacteria build-up on the tongue. Scraping can significantly reduce these odor-causing bacteria.

3. Taste Enhancement: Regular tongue scraping can lead to improved taste perception by clearing the taste buds of any coating that might be inhibiting their function.

4. Overall Health Benefits: The mouth is the gateway to the body, and maintaining its cleanliness can have positive effects on overall health. It can potentially reduce the bacterial load in the mouth, which might otherwise contribute to systemic health issues.

Say hello to a cleaner mouth and a healthier you every day!

🌿 Happy Sunday! 🦷
The best sources of vitamin D can be categorized into three main areas:

1. Sunlight Exposure: The body produces vitamin D when skin is directly exposed to sunlight. This is often considered the most natural and effective way to get vitamin D. Vitamin D3, which is the type produced by the body when exposed to sunlight, is generally considered more effective at raising blood levels of vitamin D. However, it's important to balance sun exposure with the risk of skin damage and skin cancer.

2. Dietary Sources: Although few foods naturally contain significant amounts of vitamin D, some good dietary sources include:
- Fatty fish
- Fish liver oils.
- Egg yolks

3. Supplements: Vitamin D supplements can be a reliable source, especially for people who have limited sun exposure or dietary intake of the vitamin. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and D2 (ergocalciferol) are the two types commonly found in supplements. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen.

We hope you enjoyed this beautiful Sunday and let's remember that our oral health is a window to our overall wellbeing.

Do you know why calcium is important for your oral health?

Not only is it beneficial for your teeth and gums but it also supports heart, muscle, and nerve function, making it essential for overall health.

Remember other vital vitamins/mineral aid in calcium absorption for an even stronger impact:
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin K
- Magnesium
Incorporating a balanced diet with these vitamins and minerals ensures optimal calcium absorption, supporting not just oral health but overall bone health as well.

Women are BUILT different.

But this unfortunately can be a downfall in healthcare.
We are often underdiagnosed for disease more common in men.

For example: airway issues like obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) due to several reasons:

**Symptom Presentation**: Women may report symptoms different from the classic symptoms of OSA.

**Research Bias**: Much of the research on OSA has historically focused on males.

**Diagnostic Testing Limitations**: Sleep tests, may not detect the arousals from sleep that are more common in women, leading to false negatives.

**Clinical Practice**: There’s a tendency to associate sleep apnea with symptoms that are more traditionally recognized in men.

At Sunset Dental we try mitigating the risk and use a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan to assess anatomical factors related to sleep-disordered breathing.

Sleep is critically. (Yes it is especially difficult with kids.) But this doesn’t change that it is crucial for both patients and healthcare providers to be aware of these biases and testing limitations to ensure accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Ladies, let’s take control of our health. We deserve better HEALTHcare.

While more research is needed to fully understand the connection between periodontal health and fertility, it's essential for individuals trying to conceive to maintain good oral hygiene and address any dental issues to reduce potential risks to their reproductive health.

Maintaining good oral hygiene and seeking dental care when needed is advisable for anyone looking to optimize their reproductive health.

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings can contribute to overall well-being and potentially improve fertility outcomes.

Did we really gain an hour?

It doesn’t feel like it! But we did! Can you spare 30 seconds of that hour to floss 😉

Remember:
Proper Technique-Learn the right way to gently curve your floss around each tooth for effective plaque removal. Ask your dentist/hygienist the proper way!
Consistency- Make flossing a daily habit to prevent gum disease and cavities.
Gum Health- Flossing also promotes healthier gums by removing debris that can lead to inflammation.
