Gum disease starts as plaque buildup, leading to inflamed, red, swollen, or bleeding gums (gingivitis), which can progress to periodontitis, destroying the bone and causing tooth loss. Bleeding gums when brushing, persistent bad breath, red/swollen gums, tender gums, or receding gum lines are signs of gum disease. Gum disease is linked to serious conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy complications, as bacteria can enter the bloodstream.

February is Pet dental Health month!
The gold standard for dog oral care at home is brushing. Here are some tips for getting started:

Get your dog used to the idea of having his teeth brushed. Keep the sessions short and positive. Dip your finger in beef bouillon and massage his lips in a circular motion for 30 to 60 seconds once or twice a day for a few weeks, and then move on to the teeth and gums.
Wrap your finger in gauze or place a toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the teeth and clean in small, circular motions, lifting your dog’s lip if necessary. Because the side of the tooth that touches the cheek contains the most tartar, concentrate there.
When you’re almost finished, brush vertically toward the inside of the mouth to clear any plaque you’ve dislodged.
Use a brush designed especially for dogs; it’s smaller than a human toothbrush and has softer bristles. Toothbrushes that you can wear over your finger are also available.
Use toothpaste designed for dogs; using your own toothpaste can cause distress and upset your dog’s stomach.

Today is children's dental health day! Baby teeth are very important here are some tips for parents to help their children maintain healthy teeth for their lives.
Brush for 2 Minutes, Twice a Day: Make it a fun game with a timer or song.
Healthy Diet: Explain that sugar feeds "cavity bugs," so limit sugary drinks and snacks. Water is best.
Floss Daily: Teach that the toothbrush can't reach between teeth where floss can.
Early Dental Visits: Regular check-ups from the first tooth or by age one build comfort and prevent fear.
Baby Teeth Matter: They hold space for adult teeth and help with speaking and eating.

Did you know a tooth can emerge from the gum with a cavity? While rare, this phenomenon is typically linked to a condition known as Natal and Neonatal teeth. Natal teeth are present at birth, while neonatal teeth emerge within the first two months of a child’s life. When a tooth emerges with a cavity, it is typically due to underdeveloped or weak enamel, leaving the tooth more vulnerable to decay. In some cases, these early teeth might have been exposed to an environment conducive to cavity formation, such as excessive sugar in the mother’s diet or certain medications during pregnancy.
