THE HEART OF THE MATTER
(your oral health and your heart)
Studies by the American Heart Association concluded that while a cause-and-effect relationship has not yet been proven, most heart patients have some form of gum disease. Scientists believe that inflammation caused by gum disease may be responsible for the association. Though the link between oral health and heart health is not completely clear, the existing findings show that practicing good oral hygiene may contribute to a healthy heart.
Bottom line: Since inflammation from gum disease and heart disease, artery blockage and stroke are linked, it makes sense to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

THE GOOD NEWS: YOU CAN TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR ORAL HEALTH FOLLOWING THESE SIMPLE STEPS:

Eat a healthy diet that includes whole foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and dairy.
Limit sugar intake, starches and simple carbs.
Don’t smoke or chew to***co.
Reduce stress through regular exercise. (stress can affect your body’s ability to fight infections, including gum disease)
Brush your teeth 2x daily with a soft bristled toothbrush. (try a battery operated toothbrush)
Change your toothbrush every 3-4 months.
Use an antibacterial mouth rinse.
Floss daily.
See your dentist if you notice bleeding or tender gums.
Tell your dentist if you have heart disease; you may need antibiotics before certain procedures.
See your dentist every six months for preventive checkups and cleanings.
HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY!

It is essential to make covid-19 testing available to dentists so they can test patients before administering dental treatment in order to lessen the spread of the disease, prevent illness and help save lives.
I am deeply concerned about the dental profession and COVID-19. We have been following the ADA guidelines during this pandemic and have been practicing teledentistry and keeping in touch with patients through phone, mail and social media.
To date covid-19 testing is not available to dentists in NJ and many states. The exposure to aerosols for dentists is undeniably extremely high. Dentistry is probably the most high risk of all health professions. How are dentists going to safely open their practices without testing patients before treatment and without adequate PPE? This is the United State of America at war with an invisible enemy. Making the proper supplies for testing and PPE should not be that difficult. Why hasn't the Federal Defense Fund stepped in during this critical Life and Death situation?

The ADA states that "The Occupational and Health Safety Administration has designated dentists and other health care workers who perform aerosol-generating procedures in a very high risk exposure category for COVID-19. "........

“Dentistry is essential to the public’s health. Enabling dentists to test patients prior to dental treatment will help lower the ‘very high exposure risk’ of dental personnel in contracting COVID-19 when treating infected but asymptomatic patients,” wrote ADA President Chad P. Gehani and Executive Director Kathleen T. O’Loughlin in the HHS letter. “It would add a layer of safety for both dental personnel and the patients they treat. This is important not only now — when most dentists are performing only urgent and emergency dental procedures — but also as the nation cautiously reopens."

Neglecting to test patients before dental treatment and without adequate PPE is like playing Russian Roulette at the very least and at it's worse a DEATH SENTENCE.
Before Dental practices are allowed to open for general treatment in New Jersey, please contact Gov. Murphy,Senators Menendez and Booker and your congressional representatives for help in this critical situation.
There is strength in numbers. Thank You!

VICTORY GARDENS were encouraged during WWI and WWII;
some are again turning to gardening in response to COVID-19.

Proper nutrition means eating a balanced diet so your body can get the nutrients needed for good health. The foods you eat provide the building blocks for renewing muscle, bone, skin, and blood tissues. Proper nutrition, along with exercise, help to strengthen your immune system If your body is low in nutrients that it needs, your mouth may have a more difficult time resisting infection.

Summer is the best time to get quality vegetables and fruits. Memorial Day is a great time for planting a vegetable garden in Northern NJ.

SOME BENEFITS OF GROWING YOUR OWN ORGANIC FOOD INCLUDE:

1. the enjoyment of fresh organic produce,
2. having fresh vegetables, herbs and some fruits all summer without going to the store
3. feel and be healthier with plenty of natural vitamins and minerals
4. getting out in the sunshine for vitamin D
5. exercise to reduce stress
6. feel a sense of satisfaction
7. enjoy the fruits of your labor

If you do not have room for a garden in your yard, you can try growing some vegetables ,herbs and some fruits in containers or pots on a patio or deck.
If you live in an apartment or condo try growing some healthy culinary herbs in a sunny window. (e.g. parsley, basil, rosemary, chives cilantro etc...)

Brush your teeth after every meal. Floss daily. and use an antibacterial mouthwash until we can see you in our office again.

ADA Calls Upon Dentists to Postpone Elective Procedures (March 16, 2020)
The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes the unprecedented and extraordinary circumstances dentists and all health care professionals face related to growing concern about COVID-19. The ADA is deeply concerned for the health and well-being of the public and the dental team.

In order for dentistry to do its part to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, the ADA recommends dentists nationwide postpone elective procedures for the next three weeks. Concentrating on emergency dental care will allow us to care for our emergency patients and alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments.

WE WILL BE MONITORING OUR CALLS AND ONLY TREATING DENTAL EMERGENCIES .

FRESH START FOR SPRING!

HEALTH BY CHOCOLATE

High quality dark chocolate containing only cocoa or chocolate liqueur, cocoa butter and sugar is a portable, highly concentrated source of nutrition. The dark kind (with at least 70% cocoa) has lower amounts of sugar compared with milk chocolate, and most of the saturated fat comes in the form of stearic acid – the main fatty acid in heart healthy olive oil. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, is full of vitamins and minerals, helps control blood sugar. It also contains Theobromine which has been shown to harden tooth enamel.
Try treating yourself to an ounce or two every couple of days. Moderation please! And don’t forget to brush & floss your teeth!

COLLECT YOUR POT OF GOLD

These days dental insurance is like a pot of gold. Don't let your luck run out. Yearly maximums usually renew the first of the year. Your unused benefits will not roll over to the next year. Use them or lose them.
THE GOOD NEWS: Most insurance companies allow 2 cleanings and check-ups per year payable at 100%.
If you are lucky enough to have Dental Benefits use them while you still have plenty of time this year. Don't lose your POT OF GOLD.

PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY IS THE BEST DENTISTRY.
Regular dental check-ups, cleanings and oral cancer screenings are key to maintaining good oral health. Remember the mouth is the mirror for general health and well-being. So if you do not have dental insurance practicing PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY can save any small dental problems from becoming serious problems in turn saving you money.

Take care of yourself!

2019 NATIONAL CHILDREN'S HEALTH MONTH

The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. The single day observance became a week- long event in 1955. In 1981, the program was extended to a month- long observance known today as National Children’s Dental Health Month.
National Children's Dental Health Month brings awareness to the importance of a healthy smile. It is vital to teach our children good oral habits at an early age in order for them to keep their teeth and gums healthy throughout life. Eating a healthy diet, brushing teeth at least 2X per day, and scheduling regular dental visits is a good start in keeping our children's smiles healthy. Dedicated dental professionals, health care providers, teachers, parents and care givers can all work together to promote the benefits of good oral health which contribute to good overall health.
The ADA offers free downloadable information, kid-friendly oral health worksheets and games on MouthHealthy.org, the ADA’s consumer website. Click on the For Kids tab on the left side of the page for a variety of age-appropriate activities, games and videos and presentations.

APRIL IS ORAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Oral cancer is not a rare disease. It kills one person every hour of every day in the US, and 100 new individuals will be diagnosed each day with oral cancer.

Causes: High alcohol consumption and use of to***co (smoking and chewing), prolonged sun exposure (for lip cancer), and exposure to the HPV-16 virus.

HPV-16 virus is now the leading cause of oral cancer in the US. Evidence indicates that the virus can be sexually transmitted between partners. Young, non-smoking individuals are the fastest growing segment of the oral cancer population.

When found early, oral cancers have an 80% survival rate. Unfortunately the majorities are found as late stage cancer not because these cancers are hard to discover, but because of lack of screenings.

Oral cancer screenings are crucial. In a painless, non-invasive, inexpensive, three to five minute oral cancer screening, most signs, and symptoms can be seen with the naked eye or felt with the fingers.

Regular dental checkups and oral cancer screenings can reduce the death rate of this disease. Early detection and the need for annual screenings are of paramount importance.
