Patients don’t really need all those x-rays. That’s just how the dentist pads the bill. Right? Wrong!

There are several reasons we take many x-rays. Simply put, we can’t see with the naked eye what an x-ray can reveal. They give us a baseline for any future developments. We also take x-rays to check for decay between the teeth or under existing fillings, for cysts and tumors, bone loss from periodontal disease (look for baseline and progression), abscesses, the position of adult teeth before eruption, to treatment plan for braces, and to see missing teeth, possibly for dentures or implants.

What can you do to reduce your risk of cavities in addition to for twice-daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, daily interdental cleaning and regular visits to the dentist? For children, drinking fluoridated water and/or taking fluoride supplements will help prevent cavities. For adults, drinking water will clean teeth and prevent dry mouth. Eating crunchy fruits and vegetables can remove bacterial plaque and chewing on nuts can prevent cavities by stimulating saliva production. Remembering not to clench or grind your teeth - or wearing a biteguard if you do - will help to prevent excess wear and chipping of your teeth as well as prevent TMJ disorders.
