👍🦷 “It’s just a baby habit…”
Until the teeth start moving 👀

Thumb sucking is completely normal for many babies and young kids. It’s comforting, soothing, and often helps little ones feel safe.

But when the habit sticks around as adult teeth begin coming in, it can slowly start changing the way the teeth and jaws develop.

Over time, prolonged thumb sucking can contribute to:
• Teeth pushing forward
• Bite changes
• Narrowing of the upper jaw
• Future orthodontic concerns

And the wild part?
It’s not just if a child sucks their thumb — it’s also how often and how strongly they do it.

💙 The good news:
Most children naturally stop on their own, and early dental visits help us monitor growth along the way.

No judgment. No panic. Just helping growing smiles develop as healthy as possible 🦷✨

👻🦷 Freaky Fact Friday

Some medications can actually cause your gums to OVERGROW. 🤯

Certain drugs — including some blood pressure medications, seizure medications, and immune suppressants — can make gum tissue become thick, swollen, and enlarged over time.

In severe cases, gums can begin to:
😬 cover parts of the teeth
😬 trap bacteria and plaque
😬 make brushing difficult
😬 bleed more easily

The creepiest part?
It can happen slowly enough that many people don’t notice until their smile starts looking different.

This condition is called gingival hyperplasia or gingival overgrowth.

🦷 Good oral hygiene and regular cleanings are extremely important for patients taking these medications because plaque can make the overgrowth even worse.

Always let your dental team know about any medications you take — your mouth can reveal side effects before you even realize they’re happening. 👀

🦷 What Do Sealants Actually Do for Kids?

Even kids who brush really well can still get cavities — especially in the deep grooves of their back teeth.

That’s where dental sealants come in 👀

Sealants are thin protective coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of molars to help block food and bacteria from getting trapped in those hard-to-clean areas.

Think of them like a raincoat for teeth ☔🦷

Sealants can help:
✔ Reduce cavity risk
✔ Protect deep grooves in molars
✔ Make back teeth easier to keep clean

The process is quick, painless, and non-invasive — no drilling or numbing needed.

Since cavities are one of the most common childhood health concerns, sealants are a simple way to help protect growing smiles early 💙

A little prevention now can help avoid bigger dental problems later.

🪥 Best Time to Brush: Before or After Breakfast?

This is one of the most common questions we get — and the answer may surprise you 👀

✅ The best time to brush is usually before breakfast.

While brushing after breakfast feels more natural, brushing first thing in the morning helps:
• Remove bacteria that built up overnight
• Freshen breath
• Protect teeth before eating acidic foods or drinks

☕ Why not brush immediately after breakfast?

Many breakfast foods and drinks — especially:
🍊 citrus
☕ coffee
🥤 juice
🍓 fruit
can temporarily soften enamel because of their acidity.

Brushing right away can actually scrub that softened enamel.

⏰ If you prefer brushing after breakfast…

Try waiting about 30 minutes after eating to give saliva time to neutralize acids and protect your teeth again.

🦷 The takeaway:

Before breakfast = ideal
But brushing after breakfast is still okay if you wait a little first.

The most important thing?
👉 Brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing daily.

Your teeth don’t care if you’re a morning-before-breakfast brusher or a coffee-first kind of person 😄

"I highly recommend Eastbrook dental. I’ve seen each of the dentists there and they are all so talented, personal, and do an incredible job. Going to the dentist is not fun, but from the front desk, to the dental hygienists, to the dentists themselves, they make it a peaceful and easy experience. I started going there because my mom was a patient. After I lost my mom they mailed me a handwritten card, each team member.." says Patrick on Google

👻🦷 Freaky Fact Friday

Your jaw muscles are so powerful that teeth grinding can generate MORE THAN 250 pounds of force. 🤯

That’s enough pressure to:
😬 crack teeth
😬 wear enamel flat
😬 break fillings and crowns
😬 cause jaw pain and headaches
😬 even damage the jaw joint over time

And the freakiest part?

Most people do it while they’re asleep and have NO idea it’s happening.

Signs of grinding or clenching can include:
⚠️ Morning headaches
⚠️ Sore jaw muscles
⚠️ Sensitive teeth
⚠️ Chipped edges on teeth
⚠️ Tightness in the face or neck
⚠️ Flattened or worn-down teeth

Stress is one of the biggest triggers, but sleep disorders, bite alignment, caffeine, and anxiety can also play a role.

Over time, grinding can slowly destroy enamel — and once enamel is gone, your body can’t grow it back.

🦷 That’s why nightguards are so important:
They act like shock absorbers between your teeth while you sleep.

If you wake up with headaches, jaw soreness, or your partner hears grinding noises at night… your teeth may be fighting for survival while you sleep. 👀
