❓Ask Dry Ely ❓- How Does my Sleep Apnea impact my DOT Physical?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a disorder that obstructs a person from breathing properly during sleep. The interruption in airflow results in irregular breathing and impacts the flow of oxygen to the brain.
As a result, those struggling with OSA may experience fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and other symptoms that can occur. In fact, patients with sleep apnea are more likely to fall asleep while sitting still.
Due to the dangers related to drivers with sleep apnea, the Department of Transportation (DOT) established screening exam requirements for commercial drivers. Some will need to take a sleep apnea test. While drivers are not required to test for sleep apnea, they are required to comply with a standard medical examination. If a sleep apnea test is required, the medical examiner will inform the driver of this need.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) -- commonly incorrectly referenced as TMJ — are when your jaw or the muscles in your face controlling your jaw are causing discomfort.
Symptoms include:
- Pain
- Limited movement of the lower jaw
- Clicking sounds
- Muscle spasms
- Locking of the jaw
While the exact cause of TMD issues varies, it may develop when there is excessive strain on the joints and muscle groups.
