Hold on – where’d that gap come from???
Are my teeth moving or is something else going on?
Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue in your mouth pulls back or wears away, exposing more of the tooth and, in some cases, even the tooth's root.
This can lead to creating little pockets in between your teeth, where bacteria will grow.
Unfortunately, this can lead to severe tooth decay and, worse, tooth loss.
So how do you prevent this?
You can start by maintaining good oral health practices. Brush twice per day, floss daily, maintain a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and see your dentist for a cleanup twice per year.
Some causes of gum recession are less obvious, such as changes in hormones, your genes, aggressive tooth brushing, teeth grinding, and smoking.
The good news, however, is that a properly trained dental professional can help aid in the treatment of gum recession. If the problem is too severe for that, there are different types of surgery that will also solve the issue.
So remember to take the steps toward good oral hygiene and your visits to the dentist can remain short and sweet :)
