How you infect them:

- Sharing spoons/forks
- Tasting their food to check temperature with same spoon
- Cleaning pacifier with your mouth
- Kissing on the mouth when you have untreated decay / bleeding gums / high bacterial load
- Putting baby to bed with bottle of milk/juice (sugar + bacteria = acid all night)

How to STOP the transmission:

1. Fix YOUR mouth first. Active cavities = highly infectious. Get treated before pregnancy / during.
2. Xylitol: 6g/day for mom (2x gum or mints after meals) — shown to reduce S. mutans colonization in infants by up to 80% (Isokangas et al.)
3. Don’t share saliva. Use separate spoons. Don’t clean pacifier with your mouth.
4. Don’t let baby fall asleep with milk/juice in mouth.
5. Wipe gums with xylitol wipe before teeth erupt, brush from first tooth, first dentist visit at first tooth or age 1.

Your family doesn’t have “bad teeth genetics.” You share bacteria and habits.
