Sammi was once a full-time hygienist with us and is now an Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for the Dental Assisting Program at STCC. While she only gets to spend limited time in the office, patients are always so happy to see her when she’s here.

Your toothbrush can’t do it all! 🪥

Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes to keep your smile healthy. But brushing alone can’t clean between your teeth, so the American Dental Association recommends flossing once daily to remove plaque and food debris. Flossing before brushing is ideal, as it loosens plaque and allows fluoride from your toothpaste to reach between teeth more effectively.

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that feeds on sugars and produces acids that can cause cavities. If not removed, it hardens into a rough substance called tartar or calculus, which can lead to gum disease. Once tarter forms, only a dentist or hygienist can remove it. Flossing daily helps prevent this buildup and keeps your gums healthy.
