Here's the thing about root canals… they have one of the worst PR problems in healthcare.

Because what most people 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 a root canal is and what it 𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 is are two very different things.

When the inner part of your tooth (the pulp) becomes infected or inflamed, your body doesn't have a great way to heal it on its own. That's when the pain kicks in, and yes, that's the part people remember.

But the root canal itself? That's us stepping in to remove the infection, clean everything out, and save the tooth that would otherwise be lost.

And here's the part that might surprise you:

Modern root canals feel a lot like getting a filling. Seriously.

So why does the myth stick around?

Because people associate the procedure with the pain that led them there, not the relief that comes after.

Root canals don't cause pain. They stop it.

And saving your natural tooth matters more than most people realize. It helps maintain your bite, keeps neighboring teeth from shifting, and avoids more complex (and expensive) treatments down the road.

So during Root Canal Awareness Week, consider this the official rebrand:

Root canal = tooth-saving, pain-relieving, smile-preserving.

Not so scary after all.

While alcohol can have a profound effect on the liver, your mouth actually feels it sooner.

Alcohol reduces saliva, which your body relies on to wash away bacteria and acids. Less saliva (dry mouth) means increased plaque, more decay, and a higher risk of gum disease over time.

Alcohol Awareness Month is a good reminder that oral health is part of the bigger picture. https://adanews.ada.org/huddles/effects-of-alcohol-consumption-on-oral-health/

There are a lot of flossing gadgets out there these days.

Electric flossers. Water flossers. Handheld floss sticks and picks.

They all have their place, but the original option still does the job extremely well: Good old-fashioned string floss.

It’s simple, effective, and when used properly it does an excellent job cleaning between teeth and along the gumline.

However, at the end of the day, the best tool is the one that helps you keep the habit.
