💡 Did you know? Starting at the age of 24, George Washington lost a tooth a year, and by the time he was elected President, he had only 2 teeth left!

He was severely self-conscious and often in pain all during the Revolutionary War and his presidency (and never smiled for pictures!). He partnered with many dentists to create suitable false teeth, even coiling gold wire into springs himself and sending to his dentist. Untreated infection from old root fragments are believed to have contributed to Washington’s death in 1799.

Below you can see the last set of dentures made by Dr. Greenwood, Washington’s dentist. Hippopotamus ivory and a sheet of gold? Ouch! Thankfully, Dr. DuRant is no longer using these materials for dentures, but we can be grateful to our forefather for another reason today - helping to pave the way for modern dentistry!
