The oldest known dentistry comes in the form of an infected tooth found in Italy, partially cleaned with flint tools. This tooth was dated between 13,820 and 14,160 years old. Holy molars!

Thankfully we’ve come a long way in our dental practices and technology since then.

At least, some of us have…

Ew. What’s that smell?
Nobody likes to have bad breath. It’s embarrassing and can hold you back from living the life you want to live.
Sometimes the cause of bad breath is simply poor oral hygiene, like if you don't brush your teeth before you leave the house in the morning.
Other times, it's not as simple. Bad breath is also caused by infections, dry mouth, medications, nose/throat conditions, and of course by certain eating foods.
The first step to fighting bad breath is brushing/flossing twice daily. You can also make sure to eat healthy, and stay hydrated.
If you complete all these steps and your bad breath persists, it may be caused by a deeper underlying issue. In this case, it is wise to see your dentist who can diagnose and provide treatment for the problem.
So before you reach for that pack of gum, think about what changes you can make that will improve your overall oral health.
Those around you will be very thankful ;)

Hold on – where’d that gap come from???
Are my teeth moving or is something else going on?
Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue in your mouth pulls back or wears away, exposing more of the tooth and, in some cases, even the tooth's root.
This can lead to creating little pockets in between your teeth, where bacteria will grow.
Unfortunately, this can lead to severe tooth decay and, worse, tooth loss.
So how do you prevent this?
You can start by maintaining good oral health practices. Brush twice per day, floss daily, maintain a healthy diet, stay hydrated, and see your dentist for a cleanup twice per year.
Some causes of gum recession are less obvious, such as changes in hormones, your genes, aggressive tooth brushing, teeth grinding, and smoking.
The good news, however, is that a properly trained dental professional can help aid in the treatment of gum recession. If the problem is too severe for that, there are different types of surgery that will also solve the issue.
So remember to take the steps toward good oral hygiene and your visits to the dentist can remain short and sweet :)

When should you go to the dentist?

A question older than time.

If you are feeling pain in your teeth or gums, that’s definitely a good time to go.

But what you may not have considered is that pain could have been prevented by semi-annual check ups.

Your dentist can help diagnose problems and offer simple solutions before they turn into something more serious.

So make sure to make an appointment once every six months, and don't forget to floss! ;)

Considering going to the dentist for a check up?

Here’s what the process would look like:

First, the hygienist will do a cleaning, and will use various tools in order to remove tartar and plaque from around the gum line and surface of the teeth.

Then, the hygienist will give your teeth a quick polish to ensure a bright and shiny smile!

Meantime, the hygienist may also take x-rays or report anything they see to the dentist.

Next, the dentist will arrive and take a look at your teeth, gums, throat and neck, to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. The dentist will review the x-rays and recommend any treatment you may need in order to maintain good oral health.

Finally you get to have a quick chat with your dentist about your general oral health habits – and, if you want, take a moment to shoot the breeze!

And there you have it! As long as you’ve been taking good care of your teeth, you should be all set to go.

Quick, easy, and painless :)

A question we receive a lot is…
Why do my gums bleed when I brush/floss my teeth?
The most common reason is that you have an excess buildup of plaque or tartar, which comes from eating sugary or acidic foods, and a lack of brushing.
Plaque and tartar allow bacteria to grow along the gumline.
Regularly brushing and flossing can help to prevent sensitivity and bleeding from the gums.
We'll say it again - brush your teeth!

Do you floss every day?

When you skip flossing, a few unfortunate things can happen.

You may develop swollen gums, plaque buildup on the gumline, or in the worst cases, tooth decay in between your teeth caused by buildup of bacteria.

But have no fear, you can avoid this!

Here’s some tips on how to properly floss during your daily brushing routine:

Wrap the floss around both middle fingers, then use your thumb and other fingers to have more control once you are closer to your teeth. Create a C-shape with the floss and slide it up and down the front, back and sides of your teeth 5 times. Repeat this for every tooth in your mouth.

Happy flossing!
