New expander? Here’s everything you need to know.
First things first, NO goopy impressions here. We use a digital scanner to get a precise fit, and your child’s expander is 3D printed to match their exact teeth. It goes in easier, fits better, and stays put. We know it can still feel like a lot at first but you’ve got this, and we’re with you every step of the way.
What it’s doing- the expander gradually and comfortably widens the skeletal suture in the roof of your mouth, creating more space in the upper jaw. It’s doing more than you think!
The gap- a space will likely open between your front teeth and that is a good thing. It means it’s working exactly like it should. We’ll close any remaining space once we move into braces.
How long it stays in- once we’ve reached the right amount of expansion, the expander stays in for about 6 months so the suture can fill in with bone and the width can stabilize. That part is just as important as the turning.
How you may feel- some achiness for the first couple of days is completely normal. After about a week you may also notice a slight itching sensation on the roof of
your mouth, that’s just the fibers stretching and expanding. All a good sign!
Cleaning- brush as usual, use a Waterpik to flush between the metal and the roof of your mouth, and swish with mouthwash. Staying on top of this makes a big difference.
As always, if anything feels off or you have questions, just call us. That’s what we’re here for. 🤍
