Sometimes it happens so gradually, you don’t realize how much you’ve started adjusting.

“I wish I had done it sooner.”

I don’t say that because something terrible happened while I waited. I say it because once things changed, I realized how much time I had spent simply getting by.

I had gotten really good at working around it. I knew what foods to avoid, how to smile when I felt self-conscious, and which little inconveniences were easier to accept than deal with. After a while, I barely thought about those adjustments anymore.

They had just become part of my life.

Then things started to feel easier, and that’s when it hit me: I had been settling for “fine” because I had forgotten what better could feel like.

That was the surprise.

Not that I should have done something sooner. Not that I had made some terrible mistake by waiting.

I simply wished I had given myself the chance to feel this way sooner.

“It was easier than I thought.”

For so long, I had built the whole experience up in my mind. I imagined how difficult it might be, worried about what I would find out, and convinced myself I needed to feel completely ready before I could take the first step.

The waiting turned out to be harder than the beginning.

Once I finally had the conversation, things started to feel more manageable. I had answers instead of assumptions. I understood my options. There was a plan, and I didn’t have to figure everything out on my own.
