Why can direct nonsplinted implant scanning be less reliable in a complete-arch case?

A fully edentulous arch provides limited stable anatomical landmarks. Much of the scanned surface consists of smooth, repetitive soft-tissue anatomy, making it more difficult for an intraoral scanner to accurately stitch consecutive images across the entire arch.

As the scan progresses, small stitching discrepancies may accumulate and affect the recorded three-dimensional implant positions.

A study published in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry reported that nonsplinted complete-arch implant scanning produced:

Linear discrepancy: 72 ±24 μm to 195 ±161 μm
Angular discrepancy: 0.29 ±0.06° to 0.63 ±0.13°

The authors concluded that:

“The nonsplinting implant scanning technique may not provide a clinically acceptable scanning method.”

The key message is simple:

For complete-arch implant cases, the scanning workflow matters—not only the scanner.

Using a workflow that provides clear geometric reference features and reduces long-range image stitching may improve scanning accuracy and repeatability.

Did you know that the right scanning distance can make your intraoral scan faster and smoother?

Maintaining the correct distance between the scanner tip and the teeth helps the scanner capture data continuously, with fewer interruptions and less need to go back and rescan missing areas.

Some intraoral scanners provide real-time color feedback to guide your scanning distance:

🟡🔴 Yellow-red: The scanner tip is too close or too far from the teeth.
🟡🟢 Yellow-green: The scanner tip is at the correct distance.

Watch the color feedback while you scan. A small adjustment in distance can make the scanning process faster, smoother, and more efficient.

A consistent scan path can make intraoral scanning faster, smoother, and more predictable. 🦷

Start with the occlusal surface, continue to the buccal side, then scan the lingual side. Once the main scan path is complete, go back and fill in any small missing areas.

Occlusal → Buccal → Lingual → Fill small gaps

A simple, consistent scanning sequence helps reduce unnecessary movement and improves scanning efficiency.

This scan contains a stitching error—a common issue that can occur when an intraoral scanner temporarily loses tracking and reconnects incorrectly.

One simple habit we recommend before sending any digital impression:

✅ Switch the model to Stone Color during your final review.

Surface overlaps become much easier to identify, making stitching errors easier to detect before design begins.

A few extra seconds of review can help prevent:

• Poor restoration fit
• Open contacts
• Unnecessary remakes
