Don’t skip your dental X-rays!
Problems you can’t see today can become painful tomorrow.

Unfortunately, dentist's can't see everything just by looking in your mouth.
Some things that xray's find are:
Cavities between teeth are invisible during an exam.
Decay under old fillings or crowns
Bone loss from gum disease
Abscesses around tooth roots

One of the biggest reasons not to refuse xrays is that many dental issues do not hurt until they already advanced. A tiny cavity between a tooth that would have been a simple filling, can turn in a root canal needing a crown, infection or tooth loss later!

Modern digital dental X-rays also use a very low amount of radiation, often 80-90% less than older film X-rays. A full set of digital dental X-rays is generally comparable to just a few days of normal background radiation from everyday life or a plane flight!

Mouthwash can freshen breath and help reduce bacteria, but it can’t remove plaque stuck between your teeth.

Only flossing physically removes food and plaque from areas your toothbrush and mouthwash can’t reach.
If plaque stays between teeth, it can lead to cavities and gum inflammation over time.

Think of mouthwash as an extra step, not a replacement.
Mouthwash can’t do the heavy lifting, floss still has the hardest job

Harder Brushing Doesn’t Mean Cleaner Teeth

Brushing harder doesn’t make your teeth cleaner — it can actually cause damage.

Brushing too aggressively can wear down enamel, cause gum recession, and lead to tooth sensitivity over time. Plaque is soft and doesn’t require force to remove.

Grab your electric toothbrsh & think gentle, small circles instead of scrubbing.
Your teeth and gums will thank you.

THE BIG PICTURE:
The mouth is not separate from the body — inflammation and infection in the oral cavity can affect the heart, brain, and overall systemic health.

You come in for an x-ray, but you're not offered the lead apron.. Here's why!
The American Dental Association (ADA) has reviewed the scientific evidence and officially recommends discontinuing the use of lead aprons for dental x-rays for all patients, including children.

• Modern digital x ray machines, like the ones we use in office, use a highly focused beam. This means radiation is only directed at the small area being examined, with minimal scatter.
• The digital sensors we use at Dentistry of Newburyport require significantly less radiation to create a high quality image compared to older x ray films.
• The level of radiation used is now so low that the lead apron offers no significant extra protection and can even be counterproductive !

You no longer need a lead apron for dental X-rays because modern technology has made the procedure much safer and more precise!
