I was pleased to present on the principles and clinical outcomes of PLANA therapy at the 18th World Congress of the International Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation, held September 30–October 3, 2026 in Prague, Czech Republic.

The presentation reviewed the clinical approach and current published evidence, and provided an opportunity for discussion with colleagues committed to advancing multidisciplinary cleft care. I am grateful to the congress organizers and to all who participated in the discussion.

I am pleased to share a new case series, now available online-first in the Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal: “PLANA Therapy for Infants With Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate_ Two Case Reports.”

This publication details the use of PLANA therapy to address premaxillary protrusion in 2 infants with bilateral cleft lip and palate. The results are encouraging, demonstrating premaxilla approximation achieved without intraoral appliances and through a more streamlined visit schedule.

These cases contribute to the global effort to minimize the treatment burden in presurgical infant orthopedics. Further research is currently underway to validate these outcomes—stay tuned for more.

The session focused on Presurgical Infant Orthopedics (PSIO), discussing treatment strategies using NAM and PLANA therapy in the preparation of infants with cleft lip and palate. The goal remains the same—improving surgical outcomes while reducing the burden of care on families.

This session brings together the study authors for a focused discussion on presurgical infant orthopedic strategies, clinical outcomes, and key considerations in unilateral cleft management. We look forward to an engaging exchange with colleagues committed to advancing evidence-based cleft care.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Daniela Y. S. Tanikawa for leading this research initiative. Her leadership, academic rigor, and commitment to advancing the science of PSIO have been instrumental to this project.

My presentation focused on advances in the treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate, with an emphasis on the integration of contemporary orthodontic and interdisciplinary strategies that continue to refine outcomes and improve quality of life for individuals affected by cleft conditions.

It was a privilege to connect with colleagues, share current evidence-based insights, and discuss the future direction of cleft and craniofacial orthodontics.
