I am pleased to share a new case series, now available online-first in the Cleft Palate Craniofacial Journal: “PLANA Therapy for Infants With Bilateral Cleft Lip and Palate_ Two Case Reports.”

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10556656261445532

This publication details the use of PLANA therapy to address premaxillary protrusion in 2 infants with bilateral cleft lip and palate. The results are encouraging, demonstrating premaxilla approximation achieved without intraoral appliances and through a more streamlined visit schedule.

These cases contribute to the global effort to minimize the treatment burden in presurgical infant orthopedics. Further research is currently underway to validate these outcomes—stay tuned for more.

Honored to deliver the keynote address at the course “Advanced Topics in Cleft Surgery” at NYU Health.

The session focused on Presurgical Infant Orthopedics (PSIO), discussing treatment strategies using NAM and PLANA therapy in the preparation of infants with cleft lip and palate. The goal remains the same—improving surgical outcomes while reducing the burden of care on families.

Grateful to engage with such a dedicated community of surgeons and specialists committed to advancing cleft care and innovation.

Join us this weekend the PRS Journal Club Facebook Q&A on PSIO Outcomes in Unilateral Clefts.

This session brings together the study authors for a focused discussion on presurgical infant orthopedic strategies, clinical outcomes, and key considerations in unilateral cleft management. We look forward to an engaging exchange with colleagues committed to advancing evidence-based cleft care.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Dr. Daniela Y. S. Tanikawa for leading this research initiative. Her leadership, academic rigor, and commitment to advancing the science of PSIO have been instrumental to this project.

We encourage surgeons, orthodontists, and multidisciplinary cleft teams to participate, share insights, and contribute to the dialogue.

Thrilled to share that our latest study on PLANA (Presurgical Lip, Alveolus, and Nose Approximation) has been published Online First in the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery!

📄 Evaluating Weight Gain in Infants Treated With Presurgical Lip, Alveolus, and Nose Approximation (PLANA): A Pilot Study

This pilot study examines the impact of PLANA therapy—a novel, non-intraoral presurgical infant orthopedic approach—on weight gain in infants with cleft lip and palate. The results indicate that PLANA supports normal presurgical weight gain while simplifying early cleft care and reducing the burden on families.

Congratulations to our outstanding multidisciplinary team for their collaborative efforts advancing presurgical cleft care.

Special thanks to Lucas R. Perez Rivera and Margaret M. Lico for leading this project with dedication and precision.

It was an honor to present at the 15th International Cleft Congress in Kyoto, Japan, on the topic of "Early Outcomes of PLANA Therapy: Impact on Burden of Care and Nasolabial Aesthetics.”

Our findings demonstrate that PLANA Therapy provides a simplified presurgical approach that significantly reduces the burden of care for families while achieving favorable nasolabial outcomes in infants with clefts.

Grateful for the opportunity to share our data and engage in thoughtful discussions with international colleagues committed to advancing evidence-based cleft care.
