Did you know tooth decay is the number one reason for hospitalization in children and while we cannot blame the food and drink industry entirely, they do have to take a sizable portion of the blame. We believe that if decisive action is not taken soon, then all of our dental health, not just children's, will continue to suffer the consequences. Beware of Brushing Teeth Too Long or Too Vigorously. 'Manhattan dentist Milan SeGall says patients often have a hard time switching because they don't believe a softer brush will clean their teeth as well. "They end up doing more harm than good in the interest of being thorough," he says' Check out the full article in The Wallstreet Journal. http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB949613195388458013

It's possible to brush your teeth too much. The problem is commonly called "toothbrush abrasion," and it can lead to sensitive teeth, receding gums and wear around the root of the tooth.

The American Dental Association’s (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs, on an ongoing basis, monitors and evaluates the safety of all ADA Seal-Accepted products. If the council’s evaluation determines sufficient scientific evidence exists that an ADA Seal-Accepted product poses a health risk, the council has the authority to withdraw the Seal from that product. At this time, clinically relevant dental health studies do not indicate that the Seal should be removed from toothpastes that contain polyethylene microbeads.

Polyethylene microbeads are commonly used as scrub beads, such as in exfoliating products, but are also sometimes used in chewing gum and toothpaste, as part of the product design. Small quantities of the colored polyethylene specks are included in some of Crest’s toothpastes, including Crest Pro Health, which has the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

According to the FDA;
Parents and caregivers should follow the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommendations for treating teething pain:
Use a teething ring chilled in the refrigerator (not frozen).
Gently rub or massage the child’s gums with your finger to relieve the symptoms.
Topical pain relievers and medications that are rubbed on the gums are not necessary or even useful because they wash out of the baby’s mouth within minutes. When too much viscous lidocaine is given to infants and young children or they accidentally swallow too much, it can result in seizures, severe brain injury, and problems with the heart. Cases of overdose due to wrong dosing or accidental ingestion have resulted in infants and children being hospitalized or dying.
