Impacted canine treatment in an adult patient

The best time to address canine eruption is during childhood. Palatal expansion, when indicated, can create the space needed and help guide the canines into the arch.
If that window is missed and a canine becomes impacted, earlier treatment is still preferable. The longer a tooth remains impacted, the greater the risk of ankylosis—when the tooth becomes fused to the surrounding bone, making orthodontic movement difficult or sometimes impossible.
In this adult case, we collaborated with our periodontist Dr Allison Rascon to surgically uncover the impacted canine. Using braces and gentle, controlled forces, we gradually guided the canine into the arch.
Early evaluation and the right timing can make a significant difference.
