If you're a seltzer drinker, your dentist can probably tell. Carbonated water is celebrated as a low-sugar alternative to soda, but it’s still acidic, which means it can harm your tooth enamel. The rise and popularity of these carbonated beverages has not been met by the awareness of what it can do to your teeth. Enamel erosion during exams is frequently noticed. If asked about eating and drinking habits, 9 out of 10 patients say they regularly sip sparkling water or lemon water.

High heat and steam aren’t good for the longevity of your toothbrush. Exposing a toothbrush to heat and humidity weakens the bristles and make it ineffective. Always store a toothbrush in a cool dry place, away from the shower and the toilet as bacteria love to multiply in wet and humid conditions. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends toothbrush replacement every three to four months. Some may need to replace their toothbrush sooner if the bristles look worn out. For optimum dental health, the CDC suggests people brush their teeth thoroughly twice per day and floss daily in order to remove plaque buildup.

Dental Association Shares Tips to Improve Your Oral Health in 2023:
1. Brush your teeth two times a day for two minutes for healthier teeth, good breath, fewer cavities, and to avoid painful dental problems
2. Floss daily
3. Chew sugarless gum. Chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes following meals can help prevent tooth decay
4. Drink fluoridated water. Fluoride helps prevent cavities by making teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause cavities
5. Eat a healthy diet. Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks
6. See your dentist regularly (every six months).

Bacteria and toothbrushes - here are some common-sense things you can do:
- don't share toothbrushes;
- thoroughly rinse the toothbrush with tap water after use to remove any toothpaste and debris;
- store the toothbrush in an upright position if possible and allow it to air-dry;
- when storing more than one brush, keep them separated so that germs are not transferred from one brush to another;
- don't routinely cover or store toothbrushes in closed containers. A moist environment helps the growth of most germs.

Proper toothbrush care is important to your oral health. There is no clinical evidence that soaking a toothbrush in an antibacterial mouthrinse or using a commercially available toothbrush sanitizer has any positive or negative effect on health. Some cleaning methods, including use of a dishwasher or microwave oven, could damage the brush. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed. Children's toothbrushes often need to be replaced more frequently.

Natural Ways to Fight Teeth Stains

Don’t use mouthwashes containing peroxide. Peroxide can lead to tooth sensitivity and discomfort. A good peroxide-free mouthwash attacks discoloration with solubilizers that loosen stains and forms a protective barrier to help resist new stains while neutralizing existing odors from food and/or bacteria leaving breath fresh for 12-hours. The rinse contains natural enzymes that work with saliva to dissolve stains and contains an oxidizer to whiten teeth as well.

Never use mouthwashes containing alcohol. Many mouthwashes contain alcohol, which causes dry mouth, worsens bad breath, and ultimately kills the oral microbiome which is essential for a healthy mouth.

Be careful of chlorhexidine. An antibiotic mouthwash frequently prescribed by dentists for periodontal disease, chlorhexidine, actually stains teeth. Ask your dentist about alternative chlorhexidine-free formulas that work just as well and won’t stain teeth.

Visit your dentist every 6 months. To keep oral hygiene in check, be sure to schedule regular visits with your dentist for regular teeth cleanings and checkups.

Natural Ways to Fight Teeth Stains

Drink water and eat fibrous foods like fruits and veggies. Keeping hydration levels steady and eating fresh fruits and vegetables helps remove bacteria and prevents dry mouth that can encourage bacterial growth, cause plaque build-up that eventually becomes tartar, leading to yellow and brown stains on teeth.

Avoid sugar and excessive dairy intake. Sugar and dairy products contain dense proteins that can fuel bacteria growth and plaque buildup that causes stains to stick to teeth and bad breath.

Stop smoking and chewing to***co. The ni****ne and tar from ci******es and chewing to***co is the main cause of tooth yellowing. It is best to avoid to***co products as they can discolor teeth, cause bad breath, and cause many other oral health issues.

Brush your teeth three times a day for two minutes. To effectively remove food particles, plaque, and tartar, brush three times a day for two minutes, along with regular flossing, to help remove stains and bacteria build up.

Don’t use sugary toothpastes. Look for xylitol, a natural sweetener derived from plants, which is proven to prevent bacteria from sticking to teeth, helps reduce plaque buildup and minimizes the adverse effects of acids on tooth enamel.

The National Coffee Association estimates that more than 62 percent of U.S. adults start their day with coffee. While millions love it, it’s not always the best for their teeth or breath. In response, many people turn to whitening treatments that include harsh, aggressive chemicals, powders, and detergents that can strip enamel, leaving teeth feeling sensitive and looking even worse in the long run. In time for National Coffee Day, September 29, the following tips are shared to fight teeth stains naturally and what ingredients to look for in products that promote a sparkling smile and fresh breath without having to give up that morning cup of joe.

Brush teeth at least 30 minutes after drinking coffee. Drinks that are high in acid like coffee, wine, lemonade, or soda can soften enamel so don’t brush immediately after drinking as it can cause further damage to teeth. Wait 30 minutes after drinking coffee before brushing as it allows time for the enamel to harden and saliva to neutralize the pH in your mouth.

Monkeypox is transmitted mostly through direct contact with body fluids or lesions of the body of someone who has the disease. Less commonly, it can also spread through materials that have touched these skin lesions or sores. In addition, close contact with respiratory droplet secretions may be another uncommon mode of spread, though the exact frequency is unknown. The facial lesions can vary in number and location including lips and can be papules, pustules, clear vesicles, or open sores with or without scab formation. The intraoral lesions are equally diverse and could be present anywhere in the mouth including gums, tongue, cheeks, palate and throat. These lesions can resemble other well-known conditions such as cold sores (herpes simplex), canker sores, lesions of hand-foot-mouth disease, or trauma. A search of a Google images of monkeypox facial and oral lesions can provide a useful guide.
