Invisalign is an incredibly popular treatment option when it comes to straightening your smile, especially for those who dislike the appearance of metal or ceramic braces. The clear aligners are designed to be almost invisible, and gradually move your teeth using a series of trays. However, its important to consider the pros and cons of Invisalign when deciding which braces treatment would be best for you.

The Pros
Aligners are almost invisible, which makes them an incredibly popular option compared to traditional braces. Unlike metal or ceramic braces, Invisalign does not involve any brackets or wires, which means that any repairs or adjustments are unlikely to be needed.

Another benefit of Invisalign is that your diet will not be affected: metal braces often require you to avoid certain foods during the treatment, to decrease the risk of breaking a bracket. Since Invisalign straightens your teeth using a series of plastic trays, you can simply take out the tray before eating.

The Cons
Since Invisalign aligners are not fixed to your teeth the way traditional braces are, it is crucial to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day. This means that Invisalign may not be the ideal option, especially for younger children who can tend to forget to wear the trays. The trays further have a risk of cracking or breaking if not taken care of, which can negatively impact your treatment.

Invisalign may also not be a great option when it comes to correcting severe crowding, overbites, or underbites. Invisalign trays may not be able to correct a severe issue with your bite, in which case metal or ceramic braces would be the preferred course of treatment.

Before deciding on a treatment plan, it is essential to visit your orthodontist for a consultation. Your orthodontist will walk you through all the available treatment options and decide which would be best for you.

Once you’ve had your initial consultation with your orthodontist, you’ll be ready to put the braces on! But what happens during the process, and what should you do to prepare?

The first, and most important, step of getting your braces put on is making sure your teeth are clean. Although your orthodontist may polish or clean your teeth before placing the brackets, make sure to arrive to your first appointment with a clean smile!

After your teeth are clean, your orthodontist will dry out your teeth as much as possible. The process may be a bit uncomfortable, but adhering the brackets to a dry and clean surface is essential to ensuring the brackets will hold. After drying your teeth, your orthodontist will move on to attaching the brackets to your teeth, using a small amount of adhesive to place the brackets onto the center of each tooth.

A powerful UV light is then used to cure the glue, and ensure the brackets will stay in place. The adhesive is clear and won’t be seen on your teeth. In most cases, your orthodontist will be able to place both your upper and lower brackets on to your teeth, and your next appointment will be an adjustment! However, depending on your treatment plan, your orthodontist will place only the upper or lower brackets at your first appointment, and bond the remaining brackets during your next visit.

After the brackets have been placed, your orthodontist will attach a wire to each bracket with a rubber band. The wire will gradually move your teeth over the course of your treatment and is essential to the process. Once your wire has been placed, you’ll be done with your appointment!

Your orthodontist will instruct you on some general rules to follow during your treatment, such as avoiding foods that can break a bracket or two, and an assistant will schedule your next visit for an adjustment.

If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, or have already started, you might’ve heard of orthodontic spacers. Orthodontic spacers are small rubber or metal rings that are placed between your molars to create space. Most often, spacers are used when the teeth are misaligned, and are put on before your brackets and wires.

What can you eat with spacers?

If you need orthodontic spacers, your doctor will go into detail on the do’s and don’ts of taking care of them, especially the foods you should avoid while your spacers are on. You have to be extra careful about what you eat or drink with spacers on, as certain foods such as sticky or gummy foods can damage or even pull the spacers out. Some foods to avoid include gum or gummy candy, sticky candy, popcorn, and pretzels or nuts.

While your spacers are on, be sure to keep them clean by brushing your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Use a water pick to clean around the spacers and make sure you aren’t skipping any orthodontic appointments!

As you get to the end of your Invisalign treatment, you might be wondering what comes next, or how to maintain your perfect new smile. In all forms of orthodontics such as traditional braces or Invisalign, its important to maintain the new positions your teeth have shifted into. Without any maintenance, your teeth can start shifting back to their original positions as soon as a week after you finish your treatment!
In order to maintain your new smile, a retainer is used at the end of any orthodontic treatment: although this is traditionally a clear removable aligner, some patients may opt to get a fixed wire retainer.

How often do you wear the retainer?

After finishing your treatment, your doctor may require that you wear your retainer for up to 22 hours a day for the first three months after treatment. Although this can vary, your doctor will likely ask you to schedule a three month follow-up appointment, after which you can switch to wearing your retainers only at night.

Will I need a new retainer?

If you wear your retainer as instructed by your orthodontist, there should be no danger of a retainer no longer fitting! However, when retainers aren’t worn, your teeth may start shifting back to their original positions and the retainer would no longer fit. Keeping your retainer safe, and keeping it in its case when its not in use, will prevent any damages that might cause you to need a new retainer.

In the case that you suspect your teeth have started shifting back to their original positions after you’ve finished your treatment, be sure to schedule a visit to see your orthodontist as soon as possible(and bring your retainers with you)!

After completing your braces treatment, it can be exciting to finally get your braces off! However, it's important to remember that there are still some things that need to be done after finishing your treatment to maintain your new smile.

If you're removing traditional or ceramic braces, you'll need to schedule an appointment in advance: A braces removal appointment often takes about an hour to complete and must be scheduled in the morning to allow time for your retainers to be fabricated. At your appointment, your braces will be removed and your teeth will be polished! An impression will then be taken of your new smile and your retainers will be fabricated before the end of the day.

When it comes to Invisalign aligners, the process is typically much less complex and only takes a few minutes. Although the process isn't as long as removing traditional or ceramic braces, it's important to schedule your appointment in advance. Avoid taking your aligners off ahead of time, even if you're almost done with treatment, as your teeth can start shifting back to their original positions within a matter of days!

Your retainers will be ready for pickup before the end of the day, so be sure to pick them up on time and make sure they fit properly! When your treatment finishes, you'll need to wear your retainer daily as instructed by your orthodontist for about 3 months. After getting a routine checkup with your orthodontist to ensure the success of your treatment, you can then switch to wearing the retainers at night.

In the event that your teeth start shifting after the end of your treatment, or if your retainer break or crack, be sure to schedule a visit to your orthodontist as soon as possible!

What is Corrective Jaw Surgery?

Often referred to as orthognathic surgery, corrective jaw surgery is used to correct the irregularities found in the jaw bones and to realign the jaw and teeth. When it comes to jaw corrections, some irregularities can't be fixed with orthodontics alone, so your orthodontist will work closely with an experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeon to determine a treatment plan that would work best for you.

In most cases, patients have already begun treatment with an orthodontist prior to being referred out to an oral surgeon: Braces are typically on for about 12 to 18 months before surgery can be scheduled in order to align the teeth as much as possible without surgical means. CT scanning, models of the teeth, and computer--guided treatment planning work together to develop a treatment plan and determine how the jaw and teeth must be guided to correct any issues.

After the surgery and the healing process is complete, most patients will typically need to continue their orthodontic treatment to finish aligning the teeth.

Why is Corrective Jaw Surgery Necessary?

Jaw surgery is most commonly used to address severe problems with the bite and jaw closures, facial imbalances, and speech corrections or to relieve the pain associated with TMJ disorder, facial injuries or birth defects, and obstructive sleep apnea.

When it comes to braces treatment, having an orthodontic emergency can happen, so it’s important to know what the next steps are ahead of time before any serious damage is done! Here are some of the most common orthodontic emergencies, and what you need to know in case the situation arises:

Broken brackets:
If you’ve accidentally damaged your bracket or wire, often the result of eating foods such as gum or candy, it can lead to some serious pain and discomfort. A broken bracket can significantly extend the amount of time you spend in treatment if it’s not addressed immediately. If you have a broken bracket, band, or wire, it’s important to schedule a visit to your orthodontist as soon as possible! If you aren’t due for an adjustment yet, let your orthodontist know and they will do what they can to fix the issue until your next appointment.

Loose Wires:
Loose bands or wires can result in painful poking against the inside of your cheek and can be a nightmare to deal with! If you have a loose wire, schedule a visit to your orthodontist as soon as possible before it leads to any serious complications. If you can’t get an appointment on the same day, applying orthodontic wax to the affected area can significantly relieve any pain or discomfort while you wait!

Loose Tooth:
If you feel your tooth loosening up during your treatment, it’s completely normal to be a bit worried! However, feeling a slight tooth loosening is normal during the treatment process as your teeth move to adjust into their new positions. While over-the-counter pain relievers can relieve the discomfort you may be feeling, it’s important to understand that severe tooth pain is not a normal part of the process, and an emergency visit to the orthodontist may be necessary.

When it comes to dental emergencies, such as severe toothaches, chipped teeth, or a knocked-out tooth, its essential to schedule a visit to your dentist as soon as possible. If you have brackets on your teeth at the time of the dental emergency occurring, it is absolutely vital to notify your orthodontist! Your orthodontist will work closely with your general dentist to decide on an appropriate treatment plan, and may need to remove your braces before the dental emergency can be addressed.

If you've chipped your tooth, or if your tooth has been knocked out entirely, be sure to save the part of the tooth that broke and rinse your mouth well with warm water. Apply pressure to the affected area with gauze or a cloth and use a cold pack on the outside of the affected area to keep any swelling down. Be sure to never handle your broken tooth more than you need to and avoid holding a knocked-out tooth by the root as much as possible!

Its important to avoid dental emergencies as much as you can, especially if you're currently in treatment for braces! Be sure to wear a mouth guard if you're playing any sports and always have some braces wax on hand in the event that any wires or brackets break off. Avoid eating hard or sticky foods that can damage your braces and call your orthodontist immediately if you've experienced a dental emergency.

06/24/2023

One of the most commonly voiced concerns when it comes to orthodontic treatment is dental crowding, a type of malocclusion that occurs when the teeth don’t have enough space to grow, and instead start crowing in unnatural positions. Most often, dental crowding leads to crooked and ‘crowded’ teeth that aren’t able to line up properly, which could result in significant dental issues down the line.

Dental crowding can be caused by a variety of factors, with genetics being the primary cause! Crowding can also be caused as a result of prematurely losing baby teeth, abnormal tooth growth, or extra adult teeth.

However, while some cases of crowding may only affect one tooth, others can result in the improper growth of an entire row of teeth. This can severely impact your bite in the future and can increase the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease. Regardless of the reason, dental crowding should always be addressed as early as possible and treated before it can become a serious issue.

Some signs that you may be experiencing dental crowding often include discomfort when biting, visibly crooked teeth, overlapping teeth, jaw pain, or a visible crossbite.
Fortunately, dental crowding can most often be treated with braces or Invisalign, so be sure to schedule a visit to your orthodontist as soon as possible if you’re experiencing any symptoms!

06/18/2023

So you've decided that you want to get braces, or you've been thinking about getting braces, and you're ready to schedule your first consultation with an orthodontist: but what exactly happens during a braces consultation? And how should you prepare?

When you schedule your first consultation at Advanced Dental, the first step, and arguably one of the most important steps, is to fill out your welcome forms! Welcome forms, or new patient intake forms, are required to assess your full medical and dental history. Be sure to include any important treatments you've had done in the past, especially if you have any surgical, traumatic, or TMJ history, which can all have an impact on your treatment plan.

With your paperwork completed, its time to move on to diagnostic records. These typically include photos of your teeth and bite, as well as a panoramic X-ray and a cephalometric X-ray: while a panoramic x-ray provides a full panoramic view of your bite and teeth, a cephalometric (or ceph) x-ray allows for a side view of your head, teeth, jaw, and any surrounding structures.

After your photos and x-rays are done, you'll meet your orthodontist. Your first meeting with your orthodontist is the most important, as you'll get to evaluate if the orthodontist is a good fit for you. After introducing yourself, be sure to address your 'chief complaint', or the reason you have decided to get braces. Your orthodontist will then perform an examination of your teeth and create a treatment plan, as well as offer some other options, that can resolve your main complaint and start your journey to a perfect smile!

While each orthodontic case is different, your first consultation will give you a good idea of how long you'll be in treatment for and describe the individual steps that will be taken throughout your orthodontic journey.

06/09/2023

Invisalign seems to be the best option for everyone when it comes to orthodontic treatment: with no restrictions or changes to your diet and entirely clear aligners, Invisalign is a great way to straighten your teeth without having any of the drawbacks that can come with traditional metal braces. However, although Invisalign may not always be a good choice for kids:

Invisalign needs to be worn for a minimum of 22 hours a day to be effective, and children may not remember to put their aligners back on in time. Anyone who has Invisalign knows how important it is to wear their aligners, and are incredibly disciplined when it comes to putting them back on after eating or brushing their teeth. Kids often lack this level of discipline, and may often forget to put their aligners back on or lose them altogether, which can significantly impact their treatment. In this case, traditional metal braces are the best choice as they are not removable until the very end of the treatment!

Your child’s age can also have a significant impact on their treatment: most kids are ready for braces by the time they are in primary school, or even sooner if an interceptive treatment is required, but they may not be ready for the responsibility that comes with clear aligners until they are much older. In this case, traditional braces or ceramic braces would be best.

It’s important to remember that not all issues can be treated with Invisalign, especially when it comes to a malocclusion, such as an underbite or an overbite. Clear aligners do not have nearly the same degree of pulling power as traditional braces do, and in some cases would not be able to straighten teeth the way braces can! Braces can move the teeth considerably far distances to correct any spacing or crowding issues, getting your teeth into optimal positions for a perfect smile. With Invisalign, this is not always the case as the aligners can only moderately improve the appearance of the teeth.

Whether you want your child to get Invisalign, traditional metal braces, or ceramic braces, it’s always best to start with a consultation with an orthodontist, who will give you a much better idea of if Invisalign is a good fit!
