This orthodontic appliance looks scary... but what does it actually do? 😳

This is a habit appliance and it's designed to help discourage persistent oral habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting that can affect the position of the teeth and bite.

Depending on the design, it may use a tongue crib, wires, or small blunted spurs behind the front teeth to make the habit uncomfortable and remind the tongue or thumb to stay away.

It may look intimidating, but the goal isn't to hurt. It's to help break the habit.

When these habits continue, they can affect how the front teeth come together. This makes it especially hard to eat foods and can even affect speech.

That’s where a habit appliance may help by interrupting the habit and reducing that repeated pressure. In orthodontics, a habit appliance is a device that helps discourage unhealthy thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. It may have a small crib, rake, or barrier that makes it harder to place the thumb or tongue in the same position.

A tooth feels loose after just a few days of braces… is that normal? 😳🦷

Yes, some tooth mobility can be completely normal during orthodontic treatment, especially when braces are first placed or after an adjustment.

That’s because your teeth are surrounded by the periodontal ligament (PDL) and supported by bone. When braces apply gentle pressure, the tissues around the tooth respond and the bone begins a natural remodeling process. Bone is gradually removed on one side of the tooth and rebuilt on the other, allowing the tooth to slowly move into its new position.

So a little wiggle can actually mean your teeth are responding to treatment!

If a tooth feels extremely loose, becomes very painful, or something just doesn’t feel right, always let your orthodontist know.
