Smile Pediatric Dental Care Welcome to Smile Pediatric Dental Care. We provide a superior dental experience for your children!

Dr. Lela was born and raised on a farm in Bay City, TX, with her parents and older sister. As a young girl, she spent countless hours in her grandfather’s orthodontic office and knew from a young age that she wanted to follow in his footsteps, practicing in the field of dentistry. Dr. Lela attended Austin College in Sherman, TX, where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree with a Major in Biology. She received her degree in dentistry at New York University College of Dentistry. After dental school, she spent two years at Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) in Staten Island, NY, as a General Practice Resident and served as Chief Resident her second year. She completed her 2-year post-graduate education in Pediatric Dentistry at SIUH under the direction of Dr. Steven Schwartz, a pioneer in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Lela’s comprehensive training at SIUH makes her well-trained in handling dental needs among patients of a wide range of ages and medical issues.

Does your little one ever wake up with stinky breath? Morning breath is common because saliva production slows down while we sleep, allowing bacteria to build up in the mouth. Brushing twice a day, cleaning the tongue, and drinking plenty of water can help keep those little mouths fresh and healthy!

Did you know candy can give cavity-causing bacteria a sugar feast? These bacteria turn sugar into acids that can weaken tooth enamel. Sticky and hard candies can be especially tricky because they tend to linger on teeth longer! Candy is okay as an occasional treat, but remember to brush twice a day for two minutes to help keep those little teeth healthy and happy!

Apples are a dental SUPERFOOD! They are packed with fiber, which stimulates gums and gently scrubs teeth to remove plaque. Apples also stimulate saliva production, which naturally cleans teeth by rinsing away food particles and cavity-causing bacteria. And they’re packed with vitamin C without the acidity of many citrus fruits. Plus, children who are teething often find apples to be soothing. (Don’t forget to supervise to avoid choking concerns.) And always choose whole apples over apple sauce whenever possible.

Trying to introduce flossing to a hesitant kid? Try the "Tell-Show-Do" method! Tell them what the floss does, show them how it works on your own teeth, and then do it together on theirs. Kids love to copy their parents, and modeling good habits is the easiest way to help them learn.

After a long day at school, kids are often ready for a snack! But did you know that continuously grazing on crackers or chips for hours is harder on their teeth than eating them all at once? Starchy snacks leave residue that feeds cavity-causing bacteria. Encouraging your child to sit down for a structured snack time and drinking water afterward, gives their teeth a healthy break before dinner!

You should buy a new toothbrush for your child every three months or sooner if bristles become frayed. When choosing the best toothbrush for your child, there are a few things to look for: 1. Make sure that the toothbrush is the right size for your child. The handle should fit in their hand, and the head should easily fit in their mouth. 2. Look for the ADA seal of approval. 3. Make sure that you buy a toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles and avoid those marked medium or hard.

Have you ever wondered what a space maintainer does? It helps hold open the area left by a baby tooth that was lost before the permanent tooth was ready to appear. Your pediatric dentist will consider your child’s age, tooth development, and the location of the missing tooth before recommending one. Keep up with routine visits so your child’s spacing and eruption can be monitored as their smile grows.
