Tap water is the best beverage for your teeth. It’s sugar-free, and it washes away leftover food and the acids produced by bacteria in the mouth. Fluoridated water also strengthens your enamel and makes your teeth more resistant to decay. The next time you’re thirsty, grab a glass of water! Your teeth will thank you.

When you brush your teeth, are you also brushing your tongue? It’s a prime spot for bacteria to build up. Bacteria on your tongue can also cause bad breath, so be sure to brush your tongue before rinsing, and you’ll feel fresh and clean.

Many everyday things can cause teeth to change color — ci******es, red wine, coffee, certain medications — and teeth naturally change color as we age because the outer enamel layer becomes thinner. Ask us about options to keep your teeth looking healthy and bright.

Straws have gotten a bad rap lately and for good reason! While plastic straws are bad for the environment, drinking from a straw can help reduce cavities. Sipping sugary drinks through a straw positioned towards the back of your mouth can help reduce the amount of time the sugar is in contact with your teeth … but please use paper straws or carry your own reusable straw. :)

As strange as it may seem, don’t brush immediately after eating! After you eat, the tooth’s enamel is weakened — especially if you ate or drank something acidic, such as soda or citrus fruit. Brushing right away may wear down the enamel. Instead, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing to allow your mouth to naturally rebalance.

Regular hygiene appointments are so important to your oral health. We start by reviewing your medical history and asking about any changes in your health. Then we dive into the oral examination, where we check the condition of your teeth and gums. (Sometimes this may include a low-dose X-ray and an oral cancer examination, too.) The cleaning stage involves removing built-up plaque and calculus (tartar), as well as polishing and perhaps fluoride. We wrap things up by discussing your treatment plan going forward. We look forward to seeing you at your next hygiene appointment!
