How often do you get a new prosthesis? Most insurances will cover one every 5 years. There are a couple reasons to keep up with regular replacements-

1) your socket changes, the prosthesis usually starts fitting looser, this causes an increase in mucous and friction as the prosthesis moves around in the socket.
2) your iris and sclera colors change as you age
3) the material of your prosthesis starts to breakdown and it's more difficult to keep bacteria from invading the prosthesis, increasing infection risk and mucous
