Gingival recession is characterized by a reduction in the gingival tissue level covering the root surface of the tooth.
Data indicates that more than 50% of young adults and almost 90% of aged individuals will be affected by this condition, with prevalence increasing by age.
The cause of gingival recession comprises a wide range of contributing factors, including oral diseases, excessive force when brushing, smoking, inadequate oral hygiene and anatomical considerations, but their particular impact is not yet clear.
Early and precise diagnosis of gingival recession is of paramount importance, not only for understanding of the underlying causes of the defect, but also for implementation of personalized preventive and restorative measures.(Periodontology 2000. 2024;00:1–16)
