A wiggly tooth can be one of childhood's most exciting milestones.

In most cases, baby teeth are best allowed to loosen and fall out naturally as the permanent tooth underneath gets ready to take its place.

Encourage gentle wiggling, keep brushing the area carefully, and try not to rush the process. If a tooth seems unusually stubborn, uncomfortable, or you notice the permanent tooth appearing somewhere unexpected, that is a good time to ask.

Sometimes growing up happens one little tooth at a time.

Cavities are not always as simple as “brush better.”

A child's risk for tooth decay can be influenced by several factors, including eating and drinking habits, how closely teeth are spaced, brushing effectiveness, fluoride exposure, and even individual differences from one child to another.

If your child seems to develop cavities despite your best efforts at home, do not be discouraged. A pediatric dental visit can help identify areas of concern and create a preventive approach that makes sense for your child.

Healthy smiles are a partnership, and questions are always welcome.

Back-to-school season also means a return to practices, games, and after-school sports.

For children participating in activities where falls or contact can happen, a properly fitted mouthguard can help protect the teeth, lips, cheeks, and mouth from injury.

Not sure whether your child's sport calls for a mouthguard or what type is appropriate? It is a great question to bring up at their next dental visit.

A little preparation can go a long way toward protecting the smile behind the game.

Back-to-school also means back to practices, games, and busy afternoons for many Naples families.

Sports drinks can be useful in certain situations, but many contain sugar and acids that can be tough on teeth when they are consumed frequently.

For most everyday activities, water is a simple, smile-friendly way to stay hydrated. If your child does have a sports drink, keeping it to mealtime or the activity itself rather than sipping it throughout the day can help limit how long teeth are exposed.

Healthy choices off the field can help protect smiles on it.

Around age 6, an important change is happening in your child's smile.

The first permanent molars often begin to appear behind the baby teeth. Because they do not replace a tooth that has fallen out, it can be easy to mistake them for just another baby tooth.

But these are permanent teeth, and they are meant to last a lifetime.

Regular dental visits allow us to monitor these new teeth as they arrive and help parents understand how to care for their child's changing smile.

Your child wakes up and says their teeth or jaw hurt. What now?

Occasional discomfort can happen for a number of reasons, and teeth grinding during sleep may be one possibility. Many children grind their teeth at some point and may eventually outgrow the habit.

If your child mentions morning tooth or jaw discomfort, it is worth bringing up at their dental visit. Dr. Sandor can look for signs of wear, evaluate what may be contributing to the discomfort, and determine whether anything more needs to be done.

When something about your child's smile does not seem quite right, it is always okay to ask.

Seeing a permanent tooth appear behind a baby tooth can be surprising, but it is something pediatric dentists see regularly.

Sometimes called “shark teeth,” this can happen when a permanent tooth begins to erupt before the baby tooth has fallen out.

What happens next depends on the individual child, including how loose the baby tooth is and where the permanent tooth is erupting. If you notice it happening, a pediatric dental visit can help determine whether it simply needs a little time or should be evaluated further.

Questions about your child's changing smile are always welcome.

Baby teeth may be temporary, but the job they do is important.

In addition to helping children eat and speak, baby teeth help maintain space for the permanent teeth developing underneath them. When a baby tooth is lost too early, neighboring teeth can sometimes shift into that space and affect how permanent teeth come in.

Regular pediatric dental visits allow us to follow these changes as your child's smile develops and address concerns along the way.
