Oh my goodness! It's been quite sometime since I last posted. Many new and exciting things have been happening as I've been expanding my business. Here's a look at some surgical periodontal instruments I just reshaped, polished out bur marks and/or sharpened.

I've read about hygienists taking a handpiece to their instruments to "sharpen" them using a green stone or other drill bits. I finally got an order where someone did this to their instruments. Not only does this not sharpen your instrument, but it also offsets the angle of the face, leaves grooves for debris to collect in and bake into after autoclaving. To restore this, I need to remove more metal to get the correct angle back and remove all gouges. The first 2 pictures below are the before to show you the damage done to the face of the instrument. The 3rd picture is after I've restored the instrument face. Please do not do this to your instruments.

Today I had the awesome opportunity to restore 2 vintage grass shears back to working condition. The 2nd picture are shears from 1958!!!! If I had to guess, I'd say the red handle ones are from the 1950's as well. How cool! I disassembled them, removed the rust, sharpened them, put them back together and applied oil to help prevent rust and keep all moving parts moving as they should.

It's getting cold and the snow is here. Garden tools are being put away for the long cold winter. It's a great time to get those garden tools sharpened, cleaned and oiled so they are ready for spring! I'd be happy to help you out! Here's a few pruners from customers this weekend that were taken from dull and rusty to shiney and sharp!

Having trouble sharpening your dental hygiene instruments? Let me help you! A very common issue with sharpening is creating many flats on the cutting edge of instruments. This can cause patient tissue damage and hand fatigue, not to mention, shortening the life of your instruments. The picture on the left has 3 flats while the picture on the right is the same instrument with the cutting edge honed back to it's original shape. One smooth, correctly sharpened edge. Happy cleaning!

Tonights knife sharpening was for a knife with a very common issue. The tip was sharpened and then the rest of the knife edge was flat. When sharpening it's very important to sharpen the entire edge from point to heel.

Today I had a customer bring me a knife that was no longer sharp. Upon taking a closer look, I could see not only was the knife not sharp, but it also had a chip close to the tip. I removed the chip and sharpened the knife to a razor sharp edge.
