The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. Most parents hear that and think "but they still have baby teeth." That is exactly the point. At age 7, there is enough permanent tooth development for an orthodontist to spot problems that are much easier to fix now than in 5 years. Things like narrow jaws, early crowding, and bite issues respond best to early intervention. The evaluation is simple, fast, and in most cases completely free.

Foods to avoid with braces and why they actually matter. 🍎 Hard foods like ice, hard candies, and whole apples can snap brackets off the tooth. Sticky foods like caramel and gummy candy get lodged under wires and are nearly impossible to clean out. Chewy foods like bagels and pizza crust can bend wires. Every broken bracket or bent wire means an extra appointment and potentially extends your treatment timeline. The food rules are not arbitrary. They are how you stay on schedule and get out of braces on time.

If your child chews mostly on one side or their jaw seems to shift when they bite down, that is worth having evaluated. These can be signs of a crossbite, a condition where the upper and lower teeth do not come together properly. It is often subtle enough that parents miss it entirely. In growing children, crossbite correction with a palate expander or braces is often faster and more effective than waiting. Early treatment can prevent the jaw from developing unevenly.

These fibers have a memory and naturally want to pull your teeth back toward their original position. Your retainer is the only thing that holds the position your braces worked so hard to create.
