A Dental Exam: The Inside Story

A dental exam is different from the assessment your hygienist performs because this is done by your dentist. Your dentists at Compton and Broomhead Dental Center and Dental Home Health look in your mouth for things that can and will affect your oral-and overall- health. Most of these things you can't see on your own, but your dentist is highly trained to detect. The dental exam will catch problems when they are easier and less expensive to treat. Here are a few things your dentist looks for during your exam:

* damaged, missing, or decayed teeth
* early signs of cavities
* condition of your gums and signs of gum disease
* how previous dental work is holding up
* early signs of mouth or throat cancer
* suspicious growths, cysts, or blocked salivary glands
* position, spacing, and how your teeth meet together
* signs that you clench or grind your teeth
* examine the fit and function of your dentures or partials
* inflammation on your tongue
* irritation or signs of bleeding on the roof or floor of your mouth
* evidence of gland or lymph node problems
* changes in your medical history
* a list of medications and how they might affect your oral health
