🦷📚 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY: RESET YOUR FAMILY’S DENTAL ROUTINE FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR

New school schedules can make mornings feel rushed and evenings feel packed. Between alarms, breakfast, homework, sports and bedtime, healthy dental habits can easily get shortened—or forgotten altogether.

Now is a great time to give your family’s smile routine a simple back-to-school reset!

✅ Brush for two full minutes, twice a day.
Make brushing part of two dependable daily moments: after breakfast and before bed. A timer, favorite two-minute song or brushing app can help children avoid rushing.

✅ Use fluoride toothpaste.
Choose an age-appropriate amount and supervise younger children so they learn to brush every tooth surface carefully.

✅ Clean between teeth every day.
A toothbrush cannot fully clean the tight spaces between teeth. Younger children may need help using floss or another recommended interdental cleaner.

✅ Prepare the night before.
Place toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss where they are easy to see. A visible routine is easier to remember when everyone is hurrying.

✅ Let children participate.
Allow them to select a favorite toothbrush, mark a brushing calendar or choose the family’s two-minute brushing song. Small choices can make healthy habits feel less like a chore.

✅ Lead by example.
Children learn by watching. Brushing together shows them that oral care is a normal part of every morning and evening—not something reserved for dental appointments.

Consistency matters more than perfection. If a busy morning disrupts the routine, simply begin again that evening. A few well-planned minutes each day can help protect your family’s smiles throughout the school year.

If your child missed a back-to-school dental checkup, it is not too late. Call Harbour Place Dental and reserve the earliest convenient appointment.

📚🦷 **BACK-TO-SCHOOL DENTAL REMINDER: DID THE CHECKUP GET MISSED?** 🦷📚

September is here, Labor Day weekend is just ahead, and a brand-new school year is about to begin! 🎒✏️

Between school supplies, new clothes, schedules, sports, activities, and everything else that comes with getting children ready for school, it’s easy for one important item to get pushed down the list:

**Your child’s dental checkup.**

✅ **Didn’t get it done before school starts? Don’t worry—but don’t keep putting it off.**

A back-to-school dental visit is about much more than having a bright smile for those first-day photos. Regular dental checkups give us an opportunity to look for cavities, check the gums and developing teeth, review brushing and flossing habits, and address small concerns before they have a chance to become bigger problems.

And once school begins, schedules can fill up quickly with homework, sports, after-school activities, and family commitments.

🦷 **If your child missed their summer or back-to-school dental checkup, now is the time to get it back on the calendar.**

Starting the school year with good oral-health habits can help children keep their smiles healthy all year long.

At **Harbour Place Dental**, we’re here to help make dental care a comfortable and positive part of your family’s routine.

🦷 **DENTAL Q&A OF THE WEEK**

**Q: Is brushing twice a day enough?**

**A: Not quite.**

Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste is the foundation of a healthy smile—but even the best toothbrush cannot fully clean the spaces between your teeth.

For a more complete daily routine:

🪥 Brush twice a day for two minutes
🦷 Clean between your teeth daily with floss or another dentist-recommended cleaner
💧 Choose water and limit frequent sugary snacks and drinks
📅 Keep regular dental checkups based on your individual needs

As your family settles into a new school-year routine, this is a perfect time to refresh everyone’s morning and bedtime dental habits.

💧🦷 **Sunday Dental Fun Facts – August 30, 2026** 🦷💧

**Did you know saliva is one of your mouth’s natural defenses against tooth decay?**

We rarely think about saliva, but it works around the clock to help protect your smile. Saliva helps wash away food particles and sugars while also helping neutralize acids produced by bacteria in your mouth.

It does even more! Saliva contains minerals that can help support and strengthen tooth enamel after everyday acid exposure. It also keeps the tissues in your mouth moist and makes chewing, swallowing, and speaking easier.

That's why a persistently dry mouth can be more than just uncomfortable. When saliva flow is reduced, teeth may be more vulnerable to cavities and other oral-health problems. Staying hydrated and talking with your dentist about ongoing dry mouth are simple ways to help protect your smile.

At **Harbour Place Dental**, we're here to help you understand the little things that can make a big difference in your oral health. 💜💚

Can Some Children’s Cavities Be Stopped Without Drilling?

For parents of very young or anxious children, cavity treatment can bring understandable concerns about drilling, injections, sedation, and multiple appointments. A major new U.S. clinical trial offers encouraging evidence for a simpler option in selected cases: silver diamine fluoride (SDF).

SDF is a dental liquid painted directly onto a cavity. It combines silver, which helps control cavity-causing microorganisms, with fluoride, which helps strengthen damaged tooth structure.

In the Phase III trial of 830 children ages 1–5 with severe early childhood cavities, 54% of SDF-treated lesions were arrested after six months, compared with 22.5% treated with a placebo. “Arrested” means the active decay hardened and stopped progressing.

Why this matters:

✅ No drilling during application
✅ No injection or sedation needed for the application
✅ Treatment takes only seconds
✅ May help stabilize selected cavities in young, anxious, or special-needs patients

SDF is not right for every tooth. It does not rebuild missing tooth structure, and the treated decay usually turns permanently dark. Teeth with pain, infection, an abscess, or decay reaching the pulp may require other care. Because not every cavity in the study was arrested, follow-up examinations remain essential.

The encouraging takeaway is that modern dentistry is offering more personalized and minimally invasive ways to manage decay—especially for children who may struggle with conventional treatment.

🦷 FRIDAY DENTAL TIP OF THE WEEK
August 28, 2026

🪥 Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly

When was the last time you replaced your toothbrush?

The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush about every 3–4 months—or sooner if the bristles become frayed, matted, or worn. A worn brush may not clean your teeth as effectively.

A few simple reminders:
✅ Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush.
✅ Brush for two minutes, twice a day, with fluoride toothpaste.
✅ Check the bristles regularly—if they are splayed or worn, don’t wait for the calendar.
✅ If you use an electric toothbrush, inspect the brush head regularly and replace it when the bristles show wear.

A fresh toothbrush is a small investment in a consistent oral-care routine.

🦷 DENTAL MYTHS vs. FACTS: Does Flossing Create Gaps Between Your Teeth?

MYTH: Flossing pushes teeth apart and creates gaps.
FACT: Proper flossing does not create gaps between healthy teeth.

Floss and other interdental cleaners help remove plaque and food debris from areas a toothbrush cannot effectively reach—especially between neighboring teeth and along the gumline.

So why can spaces sometimes look more noticeable after someone starts flossing regularly? Flossing itself is not pushing healthy teeth apart. Changes in swollen gum tissue, gum recession, or periodontal disease can make existing spaces easier to see. New spaces between teeth can also deserve professional evaluation.

Use gentle technique rather than snapping floss into the gums. If string floss is difficult, ask your dental team whether another interdental cleaner may be a better fit.

Keep the spaces between your teeth clean—not ignored. Ask your dental team about the best interdental-cleaning method for your smile.

🦷 **Dental Q&A of the Week** 🦷

**Why Do My Gums Bleed When I Brush or Floss?**

Seeing a little pink in the sink after brushing or flossing might seem harmless, but bleeding gums shouldn't simply be ignored.

One common cause is plaque buildup along the gumline, which can irritate the gums and contribute to gingivitis—the earliest stage of gum disease. Gums may also bleed if you've recently started flossing again or if you're brushing too aggressively.

The good news is that early gum problems can often improve with consistent oral hygiene and professional dental care. Brush gently twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush, clean between your teeth daily, and keep up with regular dental cleanings.

If your gums continue to bleed, appear swollen or tender, or you notice persistent bad breath or receding gums, schedule a dental evaluation. Finding the cause early can help protect both your gums and the teeth they support.

Healthy gums are an essential part of a healthy smile! 😁
