Many patients think all night guards are the same, but they are not!!

Over-the-counter night guards are “boil and bite” appliances made to fit everyone, and not tailored to your specific bite or jaw joints.

They are often more bulky, less comfortable, and can sometimes increase muscle tension or jaw problems because they are not properly adjusted to your bite!

Even basic night guards from non-specialists are mainly designed just to help protect teeth from grinding.

In many cases, there is little to no detailed bite balancing or TMJ adjustment performed after the guard is delivered. 🤯

At Dr. John Orthodontics, we use an advanced approach. As a doctor who specializes in TMJ treatment and appliances, I carefully evaluate your jaw joints, muscles, bite alignment, tooth wear, and overall function before designing a custom appliance.

These are not generic “one-size-fits-all” guards. I make personalized adjustments and fine tune the night guard to each patient’s specific bite to help evenly distribute pressure and reduce strain on the jaw joints and muscles.

Adjustments are extremely important for patients who deal with headaches, jaw pain, jaw locking, popping sounds, clenching, or severe tooth wear because if your bite is not adjusted properly, uneven pressure can continue placing excess stress on your muscles and TMJ joints.

The goal is not just to only protect your teeth, the goal is also to help improve function, reduce stress on the TMJ system, and create a healthier, more stable bite. 💙

Rubber bands, also called elastics, are often used with braces to help correct how the upper and lower teeth fit together.

While braces straighten the teeth, elastics help improve bite issues such as overbites, underbites, and open bites.

By applying gentle, consistent pressure between specific upper and lower teeth, elastics help correct how the jaws and teeth fit together. This pressure helps improve bite problems that braces alone cannot fully correct. ✅

Wearing your elastics exactly as prescribed is one of the most important parts of treatment because they only work when they're being worn. Not wearing them consistently can slow progress, extend treatment time, and make it more difficult to achieve the ideal bite.

Small rubber bands can make a big difference in creating a healthy, functional bite and a beautiful smile! 😁

This patient initially came to see me due to significant crowding, a deep bite, and limited space for her teeth to erupt properly. We also needed to create additional room in the upper jaw to improve her bite and overall alignment.

If this was not corrected, her crowding and bite problems would have continued to worsen over time.

This can lead to uneven tooth wear, difficulty cleaning between teeth, higher risk of cavities and gum disease, jaw strain, and even headaches.❌

We first used a Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) to widen her upper jaw and create space before starting full braces treatment. Throughout treatment, we used different wires, elastics, and detailed adjustments to improve both the function and appearance of her smile. ✅

Her treatment lasted about 24 months with appointments every 6-10 weeks.

She did an excellent job throughout treatment and her consistency played an important role in achieving an excellent final outcome. 🙌

God bless,
Dr. John Yurkovich, D.D.S., M.S.

Kids are supposed to breathe through their nose while sleeping. When breathing properly through their nose, the tongue naturally rests against the roof of the their mouth, also called the palate.

This helps support healthy jaw growth and wider dental arches as children grow. ✅

However, if a child regularly sleeps with their mouth open, snores often, or mainly breathes through their mouth, it may be a sign they are not breathing properly during sleep.

Over time, long-term mouth breathing has been linked in studies to narrower jaws, crowded teeth, bite problems, and changes in facial growth patterns in some children. ❌

Children who mouth breathe may also experience dry mouth, bad breath, inflamed gums, poor sleep quality, and a higher risk of cavities because saliva protection is reduced.

This is why I see kids as young as age 4 for early orthodontic evaluations. In many cases, identifying growth, bite, and breathing concerns early helps guide healthier jaw development and can reduce more complex problems later in life. ✅

God bless,
Dr. John Yurkovich, D.D.S., M.S.

This patient first came to see me at 12 years old because of severe crowding and a deep bite. He did not have enough space for teeth to erupt correctly, and his bite was developing improperly.

If this was not corrected, the crowding and deep bite would have continued to worsen as he grew. This can lead to uneven tooth wear, difficulty cleaning the teeth, higher risk of cavities and gum problems, jaw discomfort, and more complicated treatment later in life!

We started treatment by placing braces on his upper teeth first to create space and reduce the deep bite. After that, we bonded lower braces to continue aligning his teeth and bite.

Throughout treatment, we used different wires, elastics, advanced bite correction techniques, and detailed finishing adjustments to improve both the function and appearance of his smile. We also performed gingival contouring to enhance the final smile aesthetics and improve gum symmetry.

His treatment took about 32 months total, and regular visits were only every 6 to 8 weeks.

He did an amazing job throughout treatment, and his final result turned out incredible! His smile is now straight, balanced, healthier, and functioning properly. ✅

Orthodontic treatment is about much more than just straight teeth. A healthy bite can help improve brushing, chewing, speaking, long term oral health, and confidence.

God bless,

A question I often hear is, “Why does orthodontic treatment cost thousands of dollars instead of hundreds?”

The truth is, orthodontics involves much more than simply putting braces or Invisalign on teeth!

Behind every treatment is years of specialty training, advanced technology, high quality materials, and an experienced team working together to create healthy, lasting results.

Running a modern orthodontic office also comes with major behind the scenes costs like CBCT imaging systems, digital scanners, equipment, instruments, software, repairs, continuing education, utilities, and staffing.

Every smile and bite is different, which means every treatment plan must be carefully customized for each patient.

At the same time, we work hard to keep treatment affordable for families while still providing advanced, high quality care. Most importantly, patients are investing in long term health, function, and confidence, not just braces or Invisalign. 💙😁

God bless,
Dr. John Yurkovich, D.D.S., M.S.
