Fun fact Monday

So, how many teeth should a horse actually have?

A mature horse can have 36–44 permanent teeth, depending on the individual.

🔹 12 incisors — used for grasping and cutting forage
🔹 12 premolars
🔹 12 molars — the premolars and molars are the primary grinding teeth
🔹 Up to 4 canine teeth — most commonly found in males and usually located between the incisors and cheek teeth
🔹 Wolf teeth — some horses have 1–4, but they are not present in every horse

That means there isn't one exact number that's "normal" for every horse!

This is also why looking in a horse's mouth is about more than just counting teeth. Tooth position, wear, periodontal health, abnormalities, and the overall condition of the mouth all matter.

Every horse deserves an individual dental evaluation!

Equine Dentistry Fact of the Day!

Did you know horses’ teeth are constantly changing throughout their lives? 🤯

A horse’s cheek teeth continue to erupt slowly as they wear, which is one reason regular dental examinations are so important!
And here’s the fun part…

You can’t always tell what’s happening inside a horse’s mouth just by looking at the outside!
That’s why a proper dental exam is about more than just “floating teeth.”

🐴 LET’S HAVE SOME FUN! 🐴

There are approximately 7 MILLION horses in the United States.

Now, let’s say an Equine Dental Technician works hard and does an amazing job on 15 horses a day, Monday–Friday, for 11 months out of the year.
That’s approximately 3,550 horses per year per dental professional.

To provide dental care to all 7 million horses, we would need roughly 1,972 people doing that same amount of work every year.

Think about that. 🤯

At J&A Equine Dentistry, we have put thousands of hours into our work, and we strive to become better every single day.

We understand that experience takes time. You cannot compare someone who has been practicing for 30+ years to someone who is still building their experience. What we can do is commit ourselves to learning, improving, and providing the best care we possibly can.

We are not here to claim that we know everything. In fact, we know there is always more to learn. We do our homework, educate ourselves daily, attend continuing education classes every year, follow webinars and educational opportunities from professionals around the world, and take advantage of every opportunity we can to expand our knowledge.

Our goal is simple, we want to be the best EqDT we can be and to continue raising the standard of care we provide to our clients and their horses.
Sometimes, being a good dental professional means knowing when a case is beyond what can safely be done in the field. We have referred multiple horses to equine dental hospitals when specialized care was needed. Knowing your limitations and putting the horse first is part of being a responsible professional.

We may never know everything, and we don't claim to. But we will always continue to learn, grow, and advocate for the horses in our care.

My weekends are currently booked through November, and weekend appointments tend to fill up quickly. If you’re needing a weekend appointment, please reach out as soon as possible so we can get you on the schedule.

Saturday & Sunday appointments are offered during the spring and fall seasons only.

I do have a few October dates still available. If you’ve reached out anytime from this past weekend through today, I am currently working on dates and will be getting back to you.
