Orthognathic surgery, commonly known as jaw surgery, utilizes internal rigid fixation to stabilize the jaws. These bone plates and screws are made of titanium and are placed after an oral surgeon has moved the jaw(s). This is why jaw surgery patients no longer need to be wired shut to heal. Case 1 shows a before and after of a lower jaw advancement. Case two shows a patient after two jaw surgery. There is a nose ring present as well 😄

covid tongue is one of the lessor know symptoms of the illness. If your tongue feels inflamed (enlarged), has turned multi-colored, and/or you have lost your sense of taste you may have it. You should follow the CDC guidelines and self isolate. This means:
1. Stay home for 10 days since onset of the first symptom. 2. No fever for at least 24 hours without taking fever breaking medication. 3. Other symptoms of covid are improving (headache, muscle pain, etc.)

This is an interesting case we finished this week. It demonstrates the importance of upper jaw width. This patient had a narrow upper jaw that caused the upper front teeth to be extremely crowded. To fix this, we placed a hyrax expander to widen the upper jaw. Bone then healed in the space created, making the upper jaw permanently wider. The space seen between the upper front teeth on slide 2 shows how much the upper jaw was expanded. We then used that space to make room for the canines to erupt into a normal position. Check it out

Part 2 of 2: This is our friend Jason. Jason came to us with a mesiodens (an extra tooth between the top two front teeth) and missing adult teeth 20 and 29 (lower premolars). We decided to remove the mesiodens and treat Jason as a second premolar extraction case. Jason first had a hyrax to expand his upper jaw. We then sent him to an oral surgeon to remove the mesiodens and extract teeth A, 4, 13, K and T. Traditional braces were used to resolve crowding, correct the lower midline, and close extraction space. An additional benefit of this type of treatment was that Jason was able to avoid the future need for dental implants to replace missing adult teeth (20 and 29). So Jason not only got a great smile, but he also avoided future costly dental implants. If you would like a smile like Jason, please call us at 734-241-3399 for a free new patient exam.

Dr. Jay went to Meijer today to buy some things for the office. Walking in he saw this retainer that was run over by a car in the parking lot. We can’t wait for the call tomorrow. Patient “I lost my retainer and I can’t find it. I have looked everywhere!” Us “Okay, well can you come in today to get a new one made? By chance did you go to Meijer recently?” Patient “I did go to Meijer, why do you ask?” Us “No reason....just asking.”

Happy thanksgiving. We are thankful for all of our patients that trust us with their orthodontic care.
