One of the pillars of FDC is the new patient experience. The purpose of this visit is to start to understand each new patient at a level beyond their teeth and dental charting. To learn about the individual and their unique experiences that shape who they are.
As we do this we are able to connect in a deeper manner and move forward in our relationship better understanding each other.
At the same time, each individual conversation helps create a broader context that helps the office to evolve.
This is directed towards oral health typically, but the idea of listening and the pursuit of better understanding is at the core of the practice.
With that spirit in mind, below are some links to resources that have helped me develop a deeper understanding of race relations in our local community as well as the country. There are thousands of resources in all forms available so it is not that these are the “right ones”, but they are thoughtful and personal. I have found them helpful. I hope you do as well.
If we all seek to better understand different perspectives, if we try to connect on a deeper level, if we attempt to broaden our understanding, and if we commit to this moving forward there will be progress.
A common phrase that is used in the office is, “We treat people, not just teeth.” This is one way to live that mission.
With sincerity,
Brett Felton
